Hello all. A newbie to this forum. I have Buckeyes and Buff Orpingtons.
Welcome! Tell us more about your Buckeyes. Pics are great too, always love to see pics of other people's Buckeyes.

Just a reminder to all: the American Buckeye Poultry Club's National Meet is being held at the Ohio National show this year, Nov. 9 and 10. Currently, the judges listed are: Jeff Halbach, John Thomforde, Matt Lhamon, Tom Roebuck, Rick Hare, Jamie Carson, Lewis Cunningham, Brian Knox, and Art Rieber.

If you are a current member of the ABPC, and have a preference for judge(s) for the Buckeyes, please send me an email to pathfindersfarm @ gmail.com and I will run it by the rest of the Board, so we can make our request to the show committee. Hope to see you all there!

I find this very interesting that there would or could be a choice of which judge can look at a person's bird. I thought that all participants don't have a choice and who ever the judge is thats how it rolls. This kinda makes thinks look like they are fixed to me....

Thanks to all. Been out of chickening for many years, raised on large farm that was part of a laying Cooperative, 50,000 chickens from yellow peeps until laying. Tired of eggs and meat with little or no taste and full of hormones. I just got chicks, they are 6 days old, pictures when available. ocap, you should have taken that ride, once in a lifetime and very rare for one to say they have.

You don't get to choose the judge. Shows always say which judges will be judging at the show, and are assigned right before judging.

Right, the individuals showing their birds don't get to choose the judge at all. However, that's not to say that a breed club can't request one or two judges in particular who are familiar with their breed to be involved in judging their class. It's not "fixing" so much as trying to ensure that the judges who will be evaluating the birds are familiar with the breeds they are judging. Some judges will try to evaluate Buckeyes as though they are just pea combed Rhode Island Reds, for example, even though the type of the two breeds is distinctly different. If the breed club members know that a judge with a history of doing such a thing is on the list of judges they can request a judge that is more familiar with their breed standard to judge their class. It doesn't mean that the show committee will put that judge on the panel for that class, but there's nothing against the rules to request a judge that is more familiar with certain breeds. And it only increases the odds of any particular bird winning best in show if they are as good or better than the other breeds represented that day.

That completely makes sense. It really is sad to go in a show where the judge just doesn't know the standard of a breed so they bypass it, regardless of their quality. However, that shouldn't happen at a National level show, that just seems wrong and I would hold judges at that level to a higher standard. I know everyone has 'their breed' they have focused on most, or at least class. However, at those big shows, it only seem proper whoever selects judges should know which class or breeds each judge has more proficiency with and place them with that group. Just my opinion, maybe a little idealistic.
