I'm really loving these chicks! My last few hatches have been really spazzy, these little guys are super mellow by comparison. Took some pictures this morning, the first 3 times the flash went off they jumped a little bit, then they ignored it after that. And they practically ask me to pick them up when I open the brooder door.

I love this picture. It needs a mobster style caption I think.

The first one to hatch definitely acts roo-ish. He seems very self confident, stands up nice and tall, and I've even seen him jump on one of the other chicks.

I am getting plenty of eggs. I had a few hens (and pullets) that have laid right through November-December-January and are still laying . I didn't notice that they ever molted.

I just now noticed the name of your farm/website. How cool is that?! And so historical too. Who better to carry on with the work that Nettie did back in the day than the President of the American Buckeye Poultry Club?

btw, I could use some website set-up training from you. You see it is very elementary. My whole operation is small comparatively anyway so . . . my small farm is my nice little hobby & escape from the working world.

On another note, I heard La Fleche peeps from under my Buckeye hen when I got home & I have a group hatching simultaneously in the incubator - - sometimes I have found that too many chicks under a hen, a few may get smothered -- it just gets much too crowded under there. How many is too many?

Chris, the only peice of info I can offer is a small broodie coming home with 13 chicks. She is a EE mix. One failed to thrive. THe others she raised up until they were about 6 months, funny to watch the youngsters not much small er than she try to hide under her. lol` They have all split up now, with choices on which coop to go to at dusk. Some batches have been smaller from other hens that went awol.

For what it's worth.

I have 7 month old buckeyes from incubating, 4 more today from silkie broodie, and a dozen eggs in the bator. Since I had broodies, dec ided to go ahead and hatch.
I went ahead and moved the broody Buckeye pullet to the barn with her chicks. She is going to have 16 La Fleche chicks. Also, she is a first time broody so her first chicks . . . I have one light out there just in case. We'll see.

Jen,

Have you ate any of your buckeyes. I plan to get a few when I get my dorkings and am curious on the meat. I hear the color of the meat in general is much darker and many ppl can't get past that to want to eat the chicken. As you are a breeder can you lend some insight on that?

I'm not sure I would classify myself with the breeders just yet, but I have eaten a few. Knittychickadee has certainly butchered a lot more than I have. I found the meat darker than cornishXrock but not too different than other dual purpose breeds. Certainly not objectionable, and probably responsible for the better richer flavor of the meat. No "gamey " flavor or anything usually associated with darker poultry meats like duck or guinea.
