Buckeye Breed Thread

Today is hatch day for me!!!!! I had 12/14 make it to lockdown. When I woke up this morning I had 1 teeny tiny pip and came home to 2 fluffy chicks, we ate dinner and then I had another chick, then we ran to the store and came home to another chick hatched. These guys (ladies) are so quick to hatch. I have 4 out and fluffy, 4 pips and 4 with nothing so far. I will probably wake up to 4 more chicks. Here are some pics.

Oh my gosh, It is the 28th already. I read that you were hatching and thought it was too early but it's not! Fluffy butts are here!!!

So I posted that I have 4 hatched, wouldn't you know I went back to check and now I have 5 and a new pip!

You're right about how much different they act. When I reach into the brooder the rest run and hide but my 4 Buckeyes from Laura just come over to see what I'm doing.

I am so looking forward to getting some Buckeye chicks.

Unfortunately, I will probably have to wait until our county fair in April because I will be gone for 10 days. My DH will feed what chickens I have here, but I'm not sure he'll be able to handle feeding chicks, too.

Hopefully, someone on here will still have eggs or chicks, when I am ready.

I love reading about them and am so tempted to get some now, but common sense says to wait.

Good news, still have power with eggs in bator and ice storm going on. I got my BYC magazine yesterday and the on page 8 is a Buckeye Article Correction from Ms Beranger of the ALBC. I won't type it out but she stated that buckeye's do terrible in confinement. Would any of you Buckeye breeders like to commit on that. I usually keep my growing birds in a house with a outside pen until they start laying. The laying hens because of my small acreage have free range.

I'm not sure what terrible in confinement means, but I haven't had a problem. Like any chicken, of course, they love to free range. But I have 16 chickens in an 8x8 coop with a 20 x 30 run that do fine. Those that I have had to pen for the fair did fine, and the Chris's roo I brought home from Ohio was in a small pen for his quarantine period and had no problems, no pacing, feather pulling etc. Mine were raised confined pretty close until 10 weeks of age when they were released into the aforementioned coop and run. I don't think you'll have any problem as long as you don't overcrowd the adult birds.
