Hope they all hatch, they really are wonderfule birds.

Matt John has a starter flock of Buckeyes on sale in the auction right now! A cockerel, 2 pullets and 2 hens. This is a chance to get in with a head start. He has excellent stock.

Really hoping on great sex ratio and that they turn out to being really good looking birds. We would love to show them next summer. The lines are great so my chances are pretty good for SQ. and hopefully not to many culls. I have 12 more eggs on the way from the wonderful Mudstopper, who is full of great information! I want to dive into this Buckeye project with a great start I've been reading up like crazy. This breed just really caught my eye and I really haven't heard anything bad about them. I think they are a great bird for our winters here in Kansas.

one of my roosters has black on his chest is this a fault?

I replied: It is not a disqualification, but it is not desirable. Buckeyes are not supposed to be anything other than one solid color, mahogany bay, on the chest.

All one color like this:

Whether or not you should cull him depends. I have stated many times that personally, color is way down my list on reasons to cull. I have a cockerel now that is black splotched like that & I am culling him but more so, for other reasons (and not necessarily for the black splotches on his breast. How much does he weigh & what is his age? Does he represent a different genetic line so that you might need him for diversity? Does he have some other trait in abundance that you are trying to improve? If you are keeping some females with the breast splotches, you should not breed them to that male. I don't know anything about Hodges farm.
