A change in feed will definitely do that, especially if the new feed doesn't contain any animal protein. In my experience, especially with Buckeyes, chickens need a source of animal protein, soy just doesn't cut it.
You may wish to either:
a) increase their space, they may be too crowded and picking because they're bored
b) add some animal protein into their food, one way or another. If push comes to shove you can always get some ground beef and cook it and give it to them.
Remember, chickens are NOT vegetarians, they'll eat anything! Mice, lizards, bugs, snakes, you name it, if it moves, chickens will eat it.
Good luck with it, let us know if it doesn't get better and we can offer more suggestions.
I am soooo glad someone posted this about ANIMAL PROTEIN!!! I totally agree....i have seen my birds eat bugs, worms, mice, kill/peck moles...not sure if they ate them or not, because my cats wont touch them after killing them but they seem to disappear. If i see a young chick or juvenile has died, it has been pecked! (sorry to be gross, but i am sure everyone has seen this from one time or another) I am almost certain if they found a nest of mice or chipmunks, and they probably have, they would eat them too! I also noticed when i fed soy protein (Purina) my birds were NOT satisfied!!!! I switched to gamebird layer, and they are feeling good, spunky...plummage is awesome, and they lay great. The birds are very satisfied, they are not following me all over the place for more handouts...and the look of the birds shows it too. All my large fowl is on gamebird layer... it seems the bantams are ok with soy protein, but i liked the smaller pellet size and stuck with feeding everyone it. They all love it. I dont have any birds picking at their feathers....and moult seems to be going well on my older birds. I did recently buy outcross Buckeyes and guess what... they were picked on their backs!! So i know exactly what this person is talking about. I think it is the feed, and them lacking in protein.
