CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL COMPETITORS!!

Congrats Janet and Jen! Great showing for our BYC members.

as to the breed history, I have found a great source of original articles on the Buckeyes. Google Books has many old Poultry publications you can download and read for free. I've been pursing them and found many mentions of Mrs. Metcalf and her birds. For instance a lady in the original Buckeye Club (also called National Red Feather Club) wrote to a magazine this information:

"The Buckeyes were originated by Mrs. Frank Metcalf of Red Feather Farm. She crossed Buff Cochins with Plymouth Rocks then crossed these birds resulting from the cross with Red Indian Games. The Rhode Island Reds come from an entirely different cross, as may be seen in the Standard of Perfection...."

She goes on to describe the Buckeye and extoll it's virtues as an all around chicken.

To find this - go to books.google.com. Search for American Poultry Advocate, Volume 16 (Google eBook). The publication is dated 1907. This letter to the editor is on page 302. I searched for Metcalf to find it originally.
