Buff Barred Cochin Thread

My chicks so far are only black. I am excited to see how they mature though and I will certainly be trying to hatch more variations as the year goes on.

I'm tickled I just found this thread! I have a question for you buff barred experts.... here's the back story. I raise buff and gold laced brahma's, and lf barred cochins. One of my buff laced brahma hens injured her leg last year and I thought I'd have to put her down..after a couple weeks of tlc and living indoors, she recovered. However, the brahma hens outside wouldn't accept her back into the flock and since she was still a bit limpy, I just put her in with one of my young lf barred cochin cockerels and some other young pullets. To make this novel a bit shorter, I've since hatched eight chicks from that cross. I had originally wanted to purchase some gold laced cochin eggs and grow them out in order to cross the buff laced brahma to them and try my hand at a buff laced cochin project (which I still plan to do). In the meantime, I have these chicks from the brahma/cochin mating. Four of the chicks are solid white, one is sort of a silver spangled coloring and may end up looking somewhat like a light brahma, one is a semi gold laced color. Of the last two, one is a buff color with some white barring and white feathering...but the other has really nice barring coming in and so far no black at all. I think it has the double barring gene because its barring is pretty tight. I don't know anything as far as genetics go...but, would there be a way to take that buff barred chick and create either a buff barred lf cochin or brahma? Either breed would be a neat project but I have no idea how to go about it. Any advice would be great!!! I'll try and get a few pics up tomorrow. Thanks!

I am heartbroken

I lost my little Buff Barred Cochin roo Sunny at 3 1/2 months old yesterday. He was the only hatch and lonely, so I put him in with 2 Coronation Sussex chicks. Although they grew to be bigger than him, my Sussex are docile and everyone seemed to be getting along, but when I found him he was thin so I'm guessing the Sussex were not letting him eat. He was such a sweetheart , he would follow me around and jump up on my shoulder but I didn't notice he was thin because he was such a fluff ball. Is anyone willing to part with fertile eggs, chicks or a breeding pair close enough for a short road trip or a 1 day ship, can you private message me? I am about 20 minutes Northeast of St. Louis, MO.

I have been hatching out black chicks from Doug, the buff roo and his barred beauty, Barbara, my friend's lovely hen. I hatch out some chicks from Dynamite from Dana and a buff pullet but they have all died. They were just too small. I am going to let the eggs get bigger before I try hatching from them again. The barred hen in with him has not laid yet at all so I may wind up putting Barbara with him before my friend wants her back. I need more chicks! I only have about 80 bantam Cochin chicks right now! Not to mention my older ones that are really ready to go outside but those are Mottled, Frizzle and MF, not buff barred.
