Buff Barred Cochin Thread

Can any of you help me with a genetics question? Will breeding a buff barred roo to a black barred hen give you some of both colors or will you only get splits? How does it work?

I think you may only get black barred so you take those back to the buff again.

So far I have only bred the buff to black barred and I knew I would get all black chicks but the barring is showing up on the wings now.
Buff is harder to get in there so you have to work at it but breeding back should help. You still may get the black barred but with enough hatching you could get buff barred or even buff. These are what I would continue on with to help the project.

I am beginner at this project so I am still unsure of barred birds. This color and pattern are not my area of expertise.

ok, first to the genetics...

Buff Barred birds are Wheaten based at the e locus(eWh/eWh)
Barred rock or Black Barred birds are Extended Black at the e locus(E/E)..

so your chicks will be E/eWh E is dominant over eWh. thats why your chicks will come out looking black barred at hatch, but wont be completely black when they reach adulthood, they will resemble or look close to Golden cuckoo Maran breed(google it)

My Buff Barred trio from Lynne (wwmicasa 1) are now in the mail!

I will post pictures after they arrive Wednesday. Now if this rain will hold off so we can finish the Cochin coop. No worries though as they have temporary housing if it is not finished in time. Thank you Lynne!!!
