Wow that does suck. So sorry for your loss. Its hard when you lose them that young.

I would just not get any more chicks from that lady. Alot of people have good luck orderin chicks and I got my 17 from our local feed store and theyve all been healthy little things. I even got some sex links so I know for sure that I at least have a few hens.

Oh wow, that sounds horrible! Especially a first time experience

If I were you, I wouldn't buy from that breeder again! I do think that the brahma is a cockerel though. I hope you have better luck with your future chicks

Well, I lost 10 of my 13 day-old chicks the first night. The lamp was too warm! Throughout the rest of the month I collected 7 more chicks, and I'm not sure which ones had cocci, but I lost my other three chicks from my first batch to that. It totally sucks, and I was pretty upset about that-pretty rough month! So I know how you feel. I finally decided-no more newborn chicks for me! From now on 3 weeks old or older. I get too attached to those babies! Good luck!

Its really nice to hear from people who can relate to what Im going through. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

Although I am sorry to hear about other sad stories, it is a reminder that life is often harsh and that's just the way it is - especially in the chicken world.

Ive just got to give this another go!
As as soon as I make sure:
1)everything is clean & cooty free
2) and I find a trusted source for chicks!

Some brahmas feather funny, they are a slow feathering and maturing bird. I think you have a pullet. You'll know if the comb grows and reddens in the next couple weeks. That comb is still pretty yellow. I see pink at the tip only, but I'm looking on my iPod touch, so maybe I'm missing something. I would hang on to this one for a while.

So sorry to hear of you bad experience. I buy mine from a local store, they ship the chicks in and some are sick with respiratory issues. I always give poly vi sol vitamins with probios and I have not lost a chick yet. Last year my SS got really sick from knocking the waterer over and almost died, she spread her sickness to the other birds, but they all lived. Normally people would cull, but I'm not a breeder.

I do use DE and Sevin with the big girls, but only as a preventative. I haven't seen mites yet. I do let them free range and they do find dead mice and birds, so I try to keep up on dusting them.

Thanks for such helpful info. & congratulations for keeping your chicks healthy. Im going to make a chicken first aid/care bin and will have these items on hand. Do you put the ply vi sol in their water? Also regarding the probios, do you use the powder granules? Should I put that in their food?

I have put a few handfulls of food grade DE in their coop, and periodically dust them with it too, just in case. I havent seen any more mites yet.

We are putting the finishing touches on the coop this weekend and if all goes well I will be able to put the chicks in there by next week. As long as my little Brahma manages to grow some feathers on his/her butt!

I put the probios(fine powder) in their food and I mix it up with wet feed. I actually use the probios until its gone. Last year mine went bad, this year I also keep mine in the fridge too keep it fresh. I do put the vitamins in the water, but if they are really sick, I will also put a drop or two down the beak. It's easiest to put the drops in your hand and guide their head to drink it.

Good luck with the big switch! I'm waiting until mine are all feathered before they head out there, it will be a while though. My brahma is still mostly bare, but he/she is only 2 weeks old. I'll have to integrate mine. I will put these three in a wire dog kennel for at least 3 weeks inside the coop.

Hello,
It has been a few weeks since my last picture of our buff laced brahma...She is almost 12 wks old now. Any chance that she is a pullet?
