Buff Orphington or Barred Rock

Really? Ours are very friendly they let us pet them play with them and they love to be held! Crazy how different chickens of the same breed can be so different in personality! They can be loud at times though! My mom cant believe how friendly our girls are because when she was younger her mom had chickens and they were all mean.

It is odd. All of my chicks got the same gentle treatment from day 1. Some are like lap kitties, and others run in fear of me. There's no explanation other than individual personality traits.

I LOVE buffs. I have one at the moment, but she laid a hidden nest and was sitting on it until I found her (about a week!). I have noticed that my barred rocks are more friendly than other breeds, but the buff is a close second, and otherwise I like her more

I would pick the barred rocks if I had to chose. If you get bad winter weather, BR's are the better winter breed.

i love my buff Orps. my little orp cockerel Gulliver is the most adventurous little fellow (hence the name, he likes to travel). 2 of his 4 pullets are the same. they like to hang around me for a few minutes and then they are off on an adventure. the other 2 just hang with the flock but none of them are standoffish really. mine are only 9 weeks so i can't say anything about broodiness or egg laying.

if you really just want a broody hen to hatch eggs for you, i too would suggest a Silkie or two. i got two simply so they could be my nurserymaids and raise my standard chicks. apparently they are insanely broody, to the point that roos will sometimes steal chicks to raise for themselves! i love my little walking incubators. plus my Silkie cockerel Hansel is the biggest sweetie!

Get Both! But if I had to choose BO all the way! I have 1BO roo and 3BO hens Love them! But Silkies are the broodiest breed there is which I also have and they hatch for me and talk about great moms. Have to wait and see if my BO's go broody this spring they arent quite a yr yet... But their eggs are big and brown I would even call them JUMBO...

I prefer my BO over the BR. The BO's actually stay put when I try to pat them. The BR run away.

I ordered buff orphingtons! I figured I would order them this time and the Br next time! I know I will order again.....its like a sickness.....lol love my girls!!!
