Buff Orphingtons ?? When will I see the first egg?

We raise a variety of chickens. One of my most favorite birds is the Buff. They usually start laying when they are 6-7 months old. You should get nice large or xlarge brown eggs. They are good egg layers and a very gentle breed. If you have a rooster they are good moms.

Just one more thought on the buff and chickens in general. When buffs start laying you will get a tiny egg, almost like a quail egg. Don't panic, thats just the commercial.letting you know that very soon the eggs will be larger.. We just put straw in nesting boxes and pretty much let nature takes its course. Sometimes they will lay eggs in a nesting box with eggs or pretend eggs in them and sometimes they will choose the box next to it with nothing in it. They proverbially keep us on our toes.. Silly Chickens!!

My BO just started to lay a week and a 1/2 ago, she is about 24 weeks. She did lay VERY small eggs at first. She is also my only one that has had trouble with soft shelled eggs.

My buffs are almost 32 weeks old and still no eggs. It has been real hot down south, so I don't know if that's the problem or something else. Any ideas?

I've always been told that high temps outside will slow them down, but WOW... 32 weeks and no eggs yet?--doesn't make me feel so bad now..... are they the only chickens you have?

I had wondered, both times I found those teeny eggs, if it was the BO.////// but then, I have an older hen who I don't think lays anymore so thought that maybe she had laid them. I see pictures on this site that people post of their "first eggs" and they all look normal size, certainly not the tiny eggs I have found. Good to know that this seems to be "normal", at least of this breed. I am very anxiously waiting for the day that I find new eggs in the nests from these 6 sister hens. These BO hens have shied away from all my other hens and really keep to themselves, so I hope this does not frighten them away from the nests as a rule. In two months I have only managed to get 2 of the 6 to go into the chicken coop at night.... the rest perch up high in a shed next to the coop. Guess when winter comes they will change their minds.!!
