Hello to everyone I have been on BYC for 2 or 3 years now but have stayed with the Turkey Blog site for most of the time.
I have had Chickens for about 4 years now but decided to go from a mixed flock due to most of my chickens getting older and not laying as much.
To the Buff Orpingtons back in April I took a shipment of Buff chicks and at the end of next month they should be getting close to laying eggs for me.
I did some research on the breed before deciding on them and this is what I discovered about the breed.
There an old American breed a good duel purpose breed meat and egg layer and very good broody Hens.

I would like to hear from the long time owners of the Buffs to tell me there opinions of the breed and if I was correct in what I found on the breed.
I also have read there a very friendly breed of chicken I have seen that for my self more so than the other assorted breeds I have in my older flock.

Mstodd is correct, they originated in England, a little town called Orpington by a Mr. Cook. They are an old dual purpose breed though and a very nice one. Those you get from hatcheries will really be layers and not so much meat, however. To get a true dual purpose bird you'd have to get them from a breeder that breeds to the standard. But hatchery birds are great for someone just starting out. It can be very difficult to get the ones from breeders as they have very limited supplies plus many are sort of picky about who gets their birds. Shows are fantastic sources.

Orpingtons are defiantly from England. They were created by a man called Thomas cook from a small village in Kent England. He originally had langshan, Cochin and Sussex in the mix to make a good dual purpose breed but they were then bred for show and their dual purpose qualities were lost to a certain extent. In America Plymouth Rock and Wyandotte were put in the mix which in my opinion ruined the breed quite a bit but they have since improved but I still think American orpingtons are a fair bit different from the original English orpingtons

i read the same in a couple of different books..and i agree with you very much on adding rock and wyandotte..almost ruined the look altogether..some US breeders did a very good job of keeping the deep round chest and large size..but some became very washed out color..and very narrow..i heard one australian breeder call us version..roadrunners..he was probably seeng mainly hatchery birds..
