*Buff Orpington Thread!*

my favorite clown bailey!! She acts like a roo most of the time, skittish and wont let us within 4 feet of her

this is baileys sister, she is sweeter and very curious! I love all the pics of the orps!! I want good stock, mine are hatchery, but I love them to pieces!
I think your Bailey IS a roo ! Look at the pointy saddle feathers, and the larger comb and wattles.

I wouldn't go by the comb and wattles on a hatchery bird - there's a lot of variation among them. I have 1 that my daughter and neighbors made that mistaken assumption about one of ours - she turned out to just be faster developing, and slightly larger girl.

But the feathers definitely had me wondering...

Blow that photo up, and take a look at those saddle feathers. I take it that the other pullet is from the same hatch. Big difference in that comb development for 4-5 month old birds. I've seen a lot of hatchery Orps, but those glistening , pointed saddle feathers say boy to me.

Ha ha ha! I thought bailey was a boy, but I asked on a different thread and everyone said pullet, 2 weeks ago!! Bailey has not crowed yet nor layed any eggs so I was confused, but the saddle feathers just started showing a few days ago!! I thought she was a manly pullet, I wonder if her waddles will ever get big? they have been that size forever!! thank you for letting me know

! also bailey is 30 weeks old, and yes same delivery of chicks!!

Wow! It's been a rough winter, & I haven't been on here in forever! Just went back and looked, & my BO's r 21 weeks old now! How time flies! I am STILL not totally sure about the sex of one of them. Lol They r beautiful birds, although I wish I'd been capable of actually spending more quality time with them. :( They are very skittish and don't want us near them. I'm healed up now though. Do y'all think I may be able to get them out of that still, or r they too old?

I think if you take your time with them they will get used to you. I had one BO that was VERY skittish and she was kinda mean to the other girls even though she wasn't top hen. One day it was extremely cold out so I left them inside the coop, I went outside to check on them and she was bleeding by her ear! The other girls got tired of her picking on them they beat her up. But after that she was as calm as can be and then she started laying. I would just take your time and they will come around.

Once I have determined that my 2 BO's are ladies, I'd love to find a good, nice roo for them if anyone knows someone looking to get rid of one. I'm working towards only having my BO's and my SS's in the long run.
