*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Hi 10 days ago I found a new Rooster for our mixed flock. He is a big 10 to 11 month old buff orpington. So far he is friendly easy to catch and care for. He and his hen buddy are in quarantine as both had mites got wormed and I could feel the keel bone on both. They are both underweight as both only fed scratch grains. I gave both vitamin shot to help metabolism of feed. Now watching for anything else that may pop up in 20 days left of separation from my birds. I liked him when I saw him thought he would be a regular sized bird but nope!

My Sister and I have decided to get some more buff orpington hens or chicks to do a separate flock for him and get another roo for the original girls. How many should we get? Will be getting them from feed store or hatchery and improving from there. He isn't like the hatchery birds his size and color are amazing. When sun comes up I'll post a pic to see if he is a good starter roo. Any thing i should look for that makes him a non acceptable roo?

We got two Buffs from our feed store in January. I was really concerned about one, because she was a week behind the other in feather development. And when her feathers came in, they were a shade darker. I felt sure that we had a roo on our hands. But after 5 weeks, the combs are both light colored...no reddening at all. Here are a few pictures:

I hope they are all pullets because we can't keep Roosters where we live!

Funny about that. Some of my orpington chick feathers grew in faster than others. The only reliable way I could tell what they were before they crowed was the size of comb. Both light pink, but in the three roos, it was just that much bigger than all the pullets.
