*Buff Orpington Thread!*

One of my 14 week old BO's just turned on her three other BO sisters. They were out in the garden together all afternoon and everything was fine. I put them back in their run and several hours later I hear squawking and I go out there and she's chasing them around, one specifically, and pecking her in the eyes.

I pulled her out of the run and put her in a dog crate. That calmed things down. But what is going on? I can't keep her separated in a dog crate moving forward.

She's too young to be coming into lay and hormonal. What is up w/ this bird and what do I do?!?
This is why I got a dual purpose bird. The answer to the question 'what can i do?', is (for me) to cull that bird out and use your favorite chicken recipe.

Personally I look forward to homemade chicken and dumplings but garlic/rosemary roasted chicken also sounds nice.

Have you considered cooking them or are you eggs only?

Yes a bird acts like a bird so let's eat it. Almost as ridiculous as the girl that wanted to cull her bird because it looked ugly while molting.... :/

I put her in a dog crate in time out for 90 minutes. She did not like it at all and was really upset so I put a towel around most of the crate to make it dark and calm her down. Then about a half hour before bedtime, I put her back out w/ the other hens and all was fine.

The others ran from her at first, clearly still remembering her pecking. But she never went for them and just started preening.

This morning, all seems fine so maybe that was just a blip.

She was so aggressively going after them yesterday that it really freaked me out.
And we're going to have heat this week so I'm really limited on where I could put her in a dog crate for time out that will stay cool.
Glad to hear everything is going well.

Yea, Freezer Camp isn't an option for me. My hens are pets and have names. They make great garden helpers.

I have given away a bully before that I couldn't reform. I was just surprised by her aggression at such a young age. But she's fine now. I think she just need a little time out.

I do have a divided run but right now the babies are on one side and the adults on the other so they don't eat each others food. But once they become one big happy family, then I have a divided pen to put an aggressive hen.

Well that is good to know - that time out worked. May she live long and enjoy company. :0

If eating chickens is ridiculous then over 300 million Americans must be wrong.
If you find it ridiculous to choose the ones that get eaten by weeding out aggressive behaviors in order to maintain a healthier flock, than our definitions of ridiculous are quite different indeed.
The chickens will be eaten: whether by me, a fox, a racoon, a snake, a neighborhood dog or by worms in 6-8 years - they will be eaten. I simply prefer it to be me since I bought them, feed them, housed them, protected them, etc. etc.

Have a good day.

My chickens won't be eaten and neither will millions of other chicken owners chickens. Yes some people eat chickens it's inevitable. But eating them over something trivial and common is ridiculous. btw just because lots of people do something doesn't make it right... hope you have a good evening...

Anyone else have Orpingtons and wants to join a group dedicated to Orpingtons of Texas(And surrounding areas)?

I think that it'd be great we can also post pics of projects that we're working on, and birds we have available to sale/trade. It'd be a really fun/informative group

I just created the page so go join and add pics and information about your birds, "Orpingtons of Texas" is the name of the group.

For those of you interested:)

Thank you. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. .... I will say that if you are keeping Buff Orpingtons as pets, they are quite a pretty bird and really cute as chicks. I am not sure if there is a prettier chicken out there.

Maybe I can post pics now! Is this shark fin back feathers thing typical of buffs? Is it on both pullets and Roos? New to chickens and curious. The other buff doesn't have it.
