*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Pics
How does my Orpington look as far as SQ? I was told she looks nice. She is from MPC and I'm concerned she is too small. Do they still grow after they start laying? She also has some brown discoloration in her tail.

Do I need better pics? How does she look? Please give your honest opinions.

You need to weigh her to see if she is big enough. She has a nice comb. Is she laying? In one photo she looks two toned with her neck darker that the rest of her. You want EVEN buff coloring all over. Who is MPC ?

Thank you both! I'm in North MS and it gets dark about 5 PM now. The other pullets I picked up are a couple months away from laying so it could be that the BO is too. I haven't wormed them yet as I've been watching them closely over the past week. All of them seem happier, are voracious eaters, normal stool and now that they have plenty of room their feathers are looking cleaner and fluffier. I have noticed a difference in the color of their combs, most of them are pink and the two older girls in question have reddened even over the past week. About the only thing I've done other than have them on high quality organic feed is put ACV in their water. I've read you shouldn't worm them unless they have signs of worms?
My second girl in question is a Red Star and since her legs are bleached white I assume she was a good layer at least 6 months prior to my getting her. Her beak is beginning to turn yellow again so that's a good sign.
I don't use artificial light, I may at some point but I've felt these girls need to get into balance and relax after being in awful conditions. I'm hopeful my BO isn't old and will start laying soon. Thank you for your responses!

MPC= My Pet Chicken
How much should she weigh? Yes she is laying. She does have a slight color change (unless the glean is confusing me), but the one photo over-emphasizes it. I'll have to look at her in daylight.

(her egg is the center one. Compared to a Silkie's on the left, and a bantam EE's on the right.) It has gotten a bit bigger since her first, but is still a tad smaller than a store one.

I didn't expect her to be any good SQ wise, I was just curious. She is super fun though and lays every day. She is basically my dog. She follows me around the yard and will look in the glass door for treats! This June, I will be getting some birds from a breeder though, so I will have something to compete with then.

Hello buff lovers...l hope I can jump in here with a question. Up until joining BYC I thought a chicken was a chicken was a chicken. I knew a lot of different breeds but never knew about "pure bred" or vs. "hatchery grade." Personally, I order all my birds from a hatchery and it works well for me. However, I work with a gal who has a daughter heavily involved in 4-H and our county fair. She was disappointed last year when her hatchery (Murray McMurray) Buff Orps didn't past standard. She asked me this morning about breeders or smaller hatcheries that would sell pure (is that the right term?) BOs. I said I hadn't a clue but would post a question to some folks who might. So, what do you think? Should she be looking for a smaller hatchery or a breeder? And if anyone knows of one or both, please let me know. Thanks for all your help!!

Aww that's sad for her. JCHinks line of BO is very impressive, i am no expert but i can sure see a lovely bird line in his photos. I want BO and will order from them, She just needs to look up the breed standards and go from there. Some of the major hatcheries will tell you if you need a 4H quality show bird click here... Ugh. I would hope that their price reflects the fact its children trying to learn and help them.

is the link for that breeder. I don't know where this child is located for shipping costs but i hope this will help her, i certainly encourage children to pursue any dream they have.
