*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I got the two little BO pulleys back in April to put under my hen that had a failed hatch. She raised them and they were so pretty. A couple of days ago, the got eaten by a coon or a possum. It was a horrible massacre. I was so mad and upset. I got home tonight and walked in the porch and there was 15 new baby BO. My hubby ordered them for me because he felt so bad about my others. Long way to go before I get eggs from these little ladies.

So sweet!!!! ♡

I have 2 50% English Buff Orps. They are about 18 weeks. I have had them for about 3 weeks. They are very flighty and won't let me get close to them despite much hand feeding. Is this age or do I have flighty birds? I had a previous BO who was like a dog to me.

I don't know who you go your babies from... but as soon as they figure out where their food comes from... they should turn around.

Oh so sorry for your loss but what a sweet hubby to order chicks. He is a keeper! Anyway hubby that willing orders chicks is golden in my book. They will be laying eggs before you know it - boy how time flies. Good luck! You will have to post pictures - lots of them.

Renie - I totally agree. Once they figure out your the treat giver you can beat them off. If my birds even hear my voice the come running to the fence. They remind a lot of puppy dogs they will start following you around just give them time.

She is a beautiful girl....I am so confused. Our buffs our about 3 1/2 months old and we have one with a comb and waddle like this as well but the other 3 do not, only small combs. Everyone tells me she is a rooster, but I don't see the tail feathers. When do the girls start getting larger, red combs and waddles? Thanks.
Hers really took off after she started laying. I was worried she was a roo for awhile, she was SO much bigger than my Sussex and Wyandotte when they were chicks/pullets.

Hello jlahoward, We have 20 week old Dominique's that are flighty, but all our Buff Orp's and Black Orp's and more like a pet dog's. They follow us all around the barnyard. All of our birds have been handled in the same way since they hatched. Over the years I've noticed some breeds are more flighty than others and I guess some lines of a breed are too? Maybe they will settle with time, it was probably a little stressful for them to be relocated a few weeks back. Good Luck!!!!

Finally found someone close by that I may be able to get a few Buff Orphingtons from!!! Gonna talk to him today.. But if not, my sweety has agreed to let me order some babies, & I'm gonna get 1 Speckled Sussex hen while I'm at it, since that's what my rooster is.

Really excited about having some BO's though. My girls are friendly, so long as u don't touch. I like the idea of maybe having some that like to be petted!!!

So far as them being flighty, they'll likely settle down. If you are trying to pick them up, then yes they will seem flighty. Chickens just don't naturally take to that in general. You will get one or two here or there that does love it w/out extensive handling though. One of mine is like a pet dog. She was raised no differently from her two sisters yet is the friendliest out there. She will come when I call her, go where I tell her, and allow me to pick her up with little fuss. Whatever I'm drinking out of a can, she drinks some too. She even comes in the house when I allow it and follows me around talking to me.

Recently I moved and she wanted to be near me. Not her flock, though she is once again the top hen. But me. For security I suppose. She had a rough time right after moving with a stuck egg. She came to me and "told" me of it so I dosed her rear with mineral oil. She hated that but put up with it again, with minimal fuss. She was not handled extensively as a chick. She's just naturally really friendly. Sometimes you get one, sometimes you don't.

So far as the one that seems mean at 3 1/2 months, they do go through an "aw Mom don't touch me!" stage when they are getting ready to lay. Then after laying a bit, settle down and get a lot more calm. I can't imagine hitting one of my hens or pullets with a pipe or anything else like that. I've been known to tap them hard on the back of the head but only with my fingers. NEVER a pipe or stick. Never.

Here is a picture of my husband and his helper installing the new automatic coop door opener. Our coop finally has a door! LOL I have been carting them to their pen by hand!! the girls are 7 weeks now :)
