Yes, I plan to order chicks and start them all at once. I also don't want to chase any rogue hens around. LOL My kids are older, but having breeds that are calm, fun, and sometimes like pets is the ticket for me.

Quality Buff Orpingtons will fit the bill!!

Oh I cant help it. Have to throw in my my two cents. Another thing about Cackle is that they don't actually see the breeding birds. They get shipped thousands of eggs twice a week that go in the bators. The eggs are labeled by the breeder. If the breeder raises more than one breed there is always a chance of crossbreeding. The breeders are only concerned about getting out as many eggs as possible so they cull according to laying. Not Breed standard. AAAAANNNDDD that's about 2 cents worth so ill hush before I get into trouble again.

I'm getting closer to starting my backyard flock. I'm considering some combination of Buffs, Australorps, Red Stars. My only concern is the Buffs being picked on, even though the other two are not the biggest bullies in the yard. I do not yet know if I will have a coop/run or a tractor. When I'm outside working or cooking, I'd likely let them range about. Anything I should be aware of with trying to combine these three breeds?

How many birds are you planning on? For a large breed like orps you wont want many with a chicken tractor unless it is a big one.

She's a normal, healthy color for a pullet her age. I worry about the ones that are pale.

Pale in buff coloring or pale in comb? The one in the picture has the reddest coloring, which is why I was curious. I have a few that are not as dark in Buff coloring as her, they look closer to actual buff.

The pullet has the correct face color skin for a healthy chick. When birds are too pale in the face compared to their hatch mates, you can suspect parasites, either internal, or external.

No more than ten total. I was thinking 3 Buffs, 3 Red Stars, and 3 Australorp. If I build a tractor, it will definitely be a large one.
