*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Do you have any confirmed roosters? Because sometimes a hen will take there place if there's no roo around... That bird doesn't look like a roo to me... And my orpington rooster has no color is just head to toe buff...
Look for saddle feathers and pointed hackle feathers on the bird you suspect maybe a rooster...

This is my black Orpington. I thought she was a hen. Now I know why she hasn't laid any eggs yet. She is 8 months old. To me she looks like a big fat hen. I picked her up this morning and she must weigh 10 pounds. She's huge. I thought roos were always very colorful. She fooled me. Plus the person I bought her from sold her to me as a pullet. She has been mounting the other hens for two weeks. I guess she was just warming up for the crow.

Pretty or should I say handsome? :) He/she looks like a hen to me too, except the tail looks a little roosterish. It seems like I read somewhere where hens can crow. I am guessing there are no eggs yet? I am betting someone here with more experience than I can tell you what is going on with your little girl/boy but I am wondering if Black Orps like Chocolates develop more slowly than Buffs? Our Buff roo was crowing at 7 weeks and our Buff pullets started laying at 23 weeks. Our Chocolates are still peeping like very young chicks at 16 weeks and the one that I think might be a roo is still feathering up.

Stupid question, I know, but what is the blue stuff in her feathers? Also, happy to see her doing well!

Thanks. This is a blue antiseptic spray form when I was spraying her wounds, it just hasn't all come out out yet.

Here is another picture of my Black Orpington. It is really much blacker then the picture and has a lot of green in it's feathers also.
I think a girl but sometimes Oringtons can be slow maturing. Hopefully she will be a she in the end! And yes crowing and mounting can occur in females when there is no dominant male...

I was told that he was a hen. I would think that person that sold him to me would know. Anyway, it has been mounting 2 or 3 of the other chickens for I imagine 2 weeks. I still thought it was a hen. He crowed today for the first time. It's such a shame that I have to get rid of him and don't have the stomach to kill him and eat him. Chicken is my favorite food and he is so big. He is as big as a turkey.I know he has fluffy tail feathers but other then a little green not a very colorful bird. His comb has gotten bigger and his waddle is big so I guess I should have known. He's going down the road tomorrow. I can't have roos. I got him on Aug. 5th and she said he was 4 or 4 and 1/2 months old. I have been wondering when I was going to get some eggs, now I know why not.

hi, this is my black orp roo at 7 months old, much more developed than yours which makes me think it may be a hen. My black orp hen didn't start laying until 10 months old and looks exactly like your photo.
