Why are buff orpingtons a lot of money?
Handsome fellow. What is his name?
His name is Ollie, he's very gentle and attentive to my girls
Are they? Mine where free...
Like anything else it depends on what you are getting and where you get it from. You can buy hatchery birds quite cheap and if you don't so much about type or color they are just fine for a backyard flock. Birds from breeders will of course cost more. Why are buff orpingtons a lot of money?

also these are big birds and they eat a lot. I hatched about 30 last spring and only kept a trio to breed from, along with one cockerel that went to my breeding partner. I did sell a few that were decent quality, just not as good as the ones I kept. I sold them for $40 at 6-7 months of age. I feed certified organic feed and that probably did not cover the cost of raising them. I ate quite a few too because they had major faults or DQs that I did not want to send out into the world.
$40-$60 seems to be the going rate around here for almost any 4-12 month old standard bred large fowl. Of course it depends on the breed and whether or not the breeder is showing and winning. Birds related to big winners go for more.
