*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I had a BO grow up and lay one egg just around 6 months and then go broody. I didn't think it was possible.
So I broke her of being broody. She laid a few more eggs and went broody again. So I gave her babies to raise and she was an awesome mama.

She went broody every four weeks like clock work during the warmer months of the year. She did that her whole life. We lost her at just over 2 years of age.

And none of my other BO's have ever gone broody. I have 3 nine-month old BO's and I'm kind of hoping one goes broody.

I am so sorry you lost her so early. :( Sounds like she was broody enough for all of your girls.

Hello, new to the thread. I got two BO's last year in April. By November one went broody and hatched five chicks in 10 degree weather in mid December, and now the other one is broody! I can't believe how quick that was. Veena, mommy number one, is such a good mother. And Crouton, wanna be mommy, is really determined. She isn't mean, per se, but she is letting me know every day that I "shall not mess with the eggs"! I think she might have actually growled this morning. But she is sitting on two cracked eggs along with 8 others! I really need to figure out what she's got in there and sort through but I'm nervous to agitate her. Any ideas? Veena sat 10 eggs and I just let her go about it. But Croutons cracked eggs are making me nervous.

Welcome to the thread! Put on some gloves and slowly sneak your hand under there. Just kind of prop her up a bit and grab those cracked eggs. I would candle them depending on what day they are. Some cracked eggs do still hatch out ok.

We were on an anniversary trip this weekend and dear old dad chicken sat. He doesn't gather eggs and the cracked ones are the ones that froze I think. That is also why there are so many eggs under her at the moment. Normally they are collected twice a day in the winter. I don't even know that any of them are viable. I'm going to have to wait until she is asleep and pop in for a peek i guess! I have a flashlight that I think would work for a quick candler.
