*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I have 13 chicks, 5 different breeds. Most are still fairly young, but I do find the BOs to be in the lead along with my SLWs.

4 Buff Orpingtons (~3 wks old)
3 Easter Eggers (~2 wks)
2 Silver Laced Wyandottes (~4-5 wks)
2 Barred Rocks (~2.5 wks)
2 Black Australorp (~2 wks)
One of my BO's and 1 SLW are the most dominant. The buffs are always finding bugs first, first to eat from my hand and reach the feeder along with the SLWs. The barred rocks are a close 2nd. The last ones are always my EEs.

My barred rocks are top in the brooder, then the bo, bantam and ee.
I have a total of 24 baby chickens.
11 barred rocks, 2 are 10 days old seperated from the rest
1 buff
1 ee
3 bantams, Porcelain belgian, silkie, old english
4 australorps
1 brown leg horn
1 production red

Not to mention they like to tease my ducklings when i have the entire flock running my dining room, kitchen and laundry room. Easy clean ups lol

Aren't buff orpingtons always top of the pecking order?

I wouldn't necessarily say that...rank in pecking order is affected by personalities, age, healthiness, size, etc, etc. If you have a flock of silkies and a old BO hen, the silkies might dominate her. I actually had a Lavender Orp that was the lowest in the pecking order, and if a rooster came within ten feet of her, she squatted. She was so submissive I had to give her to a lady with no roosters. It depends... However, generally speaking, perhaps Orpingtons are often higher in the ranks than not, its just not always the case. I think it differs on a flock to flock basis.

How would you all rate the flavor, juiciness and taste of the Buff Orpington? Also interested on the same criteria for eggs. Likes/Dislikes I'd like to hear them both please.

I can't comment on how BO's taste. Eggs(?) well, the eggs taste like backyard chicken eggs - pretty much the same as all the other breeds I have. Much better than what you can find in the grocery store. The quality of eggs depends on diet and environment, not breed, imho. Fresh feed, fresh clean water, fresh veggies/fruit, a little scratch (corn, sunflower seeds, etc.), plenty of space/room to move around, a relatively stress free environment and a little TLC make happy chickens.

Likes/dislikes of BO's - I don't have any dislikes that I know of. They are gentle, sweet natured, fairly calm and friendly, pretty to look at and are moderately active birds. It all really comes down to what your criteria and goals are.
