7 or our 8 chicks. They are 1-2 weeks old I’m told.

Chicks 3 years ago and my favorite Buff now. Well, she is under the weather but this was a few weeks ago. This girl with the floppy comb completely stole my heart!! She is such a joy!

By the way, I completely have chick fever and must get babies ASAP!

She's lovely! Don't you just love Buff chicks:)

BO coop question. I have the size figured out but not the height. What minimum height would you recommend for the inside of a coop for these guys?
Thank you!

Generally for a coop you want at least 4sqft. of space per bird. I don't think I've ever seen a minimum height recommendation, but...it's nice to have your coop as tall as you can.

Are you planning on a walk-in coop or one of the smaller types that you lean in and clean?

Large fowl like Orpington do need room to fly from roosts - aim for at least 1sqft of roosting space per bird too. I have a walk-in coop with probably 7-8ft ceiling, so my highest roost is around 4 1/2ft up.

Did that make any sense - LOL I'm not a coop builder at all, so you may get some good suggestions by posing your question on the coop forums too https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance.9/

Actually you answered my question and then some. Thank you! I want a walk- in but I wanted to make sure I have them plenty of space since I'm only 5ft 1

Build as big as you can and plan out your run where you can expand if needed. As time goes by, you will want to add more birds (you will:D) and having a generous coop to begin with helps.

image.jpg Last year we went to pick up our first chickens: three two- month old Barred Rock pullets. When we got there we were so taken by the beautiful Buff Orpington pullets, we brought home two Barred Rocks and one Buff Orpington instead. I still regret not getting two Buff Orpingtons. We inherited the Amberlink from a neighbor about a month later.
