Buff Orpingtons

I've already been wanting some Buff Orpingtons...and then I looked at all these great pictures. Oh no

I told my husband I wasn't getting any chicks for a very long time after I got my black stars at the end of August.

We really don't need more but I'm sure I'll have him worn down by spring.

I never thought I'd get addicted to chickens.

I only have one Buff Orp, so its very easy to distiguish that blonde sweetie from the rest. My others, though, are all RIR (or ISA brown - I'm not 100% sure) and look so much the same. I've got one who stands out from the rest with just her demeanor, but people always ask how I can tell them all apart. It was hard at first, until I noticed that some of their legs were darker or lighter and some had hints of brown streaks on their feet and legs. For a while, thats how I told them apart! Now that they're grown up, I just know who is who. I have some chicks coming in Oct though and I'm seriously considering painting a single toenail a different polish color until I can keep track of them. Thats what our lab breeder did to know which puppy we had picked in her litter. We'll see!

It is a sickness isn't it? I read your post aloud to my hubby & he laughed & said "Oh the poor guy" cause we all know we wear them down...... And I have to tell you when you get a Buff Orpington chick that is a day old it is so small it is like incredible! the pic of the chick on my profile is one of mine straight out of the box it came home here in. They truly look like the sugar peeps at Easter/spring. They're just adorable! And so maybe that'll be your angle next spring a easter gift or mothers day etc. LOL

Yes that's what I use to do when I had bred my cocker spaniel years ago. After the 3rd wk though I would sort of just know them apart but then I was with them a LOT. These little darlings are just SO close in looks etc I do the "here chick chick chickie" to all of them. LOL The Roo was a LOT bigger than the Pullets and then there was another larger pullet who for a couple weeks I thought might follow and be a Roo because she was so large but her comb never grew like his did. He was a bit darker than the rest & so was that 1 girl. I have noticed very sutle differences in shades of color but very slight & I would have to be there with them for a good amount of time I think before I'm really gonna know who is who. And the naming is going to be real tough... LOL

I used to have a Buff Orpington rooster. His name was Cockadodle and he was a total gentleman. He was sweet and easy to handle and he mentored the younger roosters. If I could have a rooster here it would definitely be a BO.

Salve&Fluffer :

I never had any trouble telling the chicks apart, even if they were from the same breed.

LOL well you're gonna have to give the rest of us lessons in how to tell them apart ...... They're all darling of course but even THAT is all of them.
