Buff & Red Silkies with BLUE or Lavender feathers??? Ummm Help???

Quote:
They just look like smutty buffs. No such thing as blue-buff. They could be from a buff mated to a blue to try and lighten the black smut to blue. I hatch out a couple that look like that each year, and they get culled out of my breeding program (sold off as pets). If you are looking to breed buffs, then you could "try" breeding them to as clear of a male as you can get and keep the best offspring. Otherwise I would suggest finding new hens. I did have a hen that had blue in her crest like those, but her buff coloring was even, so I decided to breed her to see what I got and I did get a couple nice chicks from her.

THANK You Sundown, I so appreciate the info. I try to breed to standard as I have some very nice birds, but these 2 girls (came as a group) set me aside...Had to think about WHAT they may be and how I could use them

I will cull them and send down the road. Again, appreciate the input!!

I dont know anyone who raises reds, pure reds that is. Surely someone will come along who can better direct you.

Suze, I couldnt get any decent pics of the roo (he's a quick lil booger), but I took these of the blue buff (???) hens. Would you mind lending your knowledge and genetic input on these 2 girls? They are buff with blue or lavender heads and bums...is "blue-buff" the proper term? Also, how would I go about breeding them, a blue roo or pure buff roo?? The one hen is shown standing next to a dark blue hen. Hopefully that will give a better idea of the BLUE in both girls

he looks almost as if he's partridge

Culling doesn't mean kill, it means removing. Most people don't kill healthy handlable chickens for color. They find them a pet home or auction them
