Hatched out 3 buffs. The last one wasn't dry yet so I just took a pic of these 2. One has a huge vault.

Oh! they are so cute the one with the huge vault looks as though someone put a cotton ball on it's head. What day did they hatch on, was it day 18 or am I imagining that

I'm afraid I won't start lockdown on time this is my first hatch with Silkies. Everything seems to be different with them.

They hatched late in day 20, early in day 21.

Ive been told that the shaded off buff color isn't as important as the eveness in the coloring. I took 6 buffs to a show in January and my girls got BV and RV. They were the lightest two I had brought.

this makes me feel better, as the lighter color is more to my preference, I was told the deep buff color is preferred, as well as the evenness, I guess maybe it depends on whos judging? Good question, Gordonhill, I would like to know also.

Very cute sundown silkies

new chickies . And thanks for answering but still would like to know how or what the crosses were to start the buff colour in silkies . And here's a big one why do some have black feathers in their tails ? ( mostly been Roos . Although I have had some poulets too -- I've herd them called smuttie or dirty - my question is where does it come from ? ) And all of the lighter ones I've seen really aren't very smooth in colour . They tend to have a few very lighter places through out them . I really wish my camera was working I have such a variety of examples here - From a number of breeders here on BYC -- all from eggs I've been buying and hatching . I haven't any from you though , Buff really wasn't a colour I was interested in breeding . I recently decided that with all these beautiful Buffs I should probably learn a little and try to work towards bettering what I have . Tammy

How am I just now finding this thread?! Nice to see others working on the buff color. I think they are the prettiest of the silkies!

Great looking chicks, Sundown!

This is my breeding flock. The incubator frees up in about two weeks. Whoohooo!

In my experience, it is going to vary widely by judge. All other things equal, some will differentiate based on down color, or overall color... but the tie breaker could also be one of a zillion other variables (some get picky on toe spacing, even though it's supposed to be a minor # of points, some get picky on eye color, or comb, or wings, or quill color)
