Hi we have buffs too...the color from what i understand comes thru two crosses on a wheaten base and another a blue type base....not sure on the proper term here...the males that have the darker combs generally have the blacker smut and the other type who has no smut or its very faint and bluish generally have lighter combs and sometimes eyes..so you pick what you like and go with it...we have both color of males and are getting nice colored chicks off both on our girls who range in shade from dark to light buff ...i just try to keep a fairly consistent shade and as little smut as possible...there are so many things silkies can get counted against them it becomes a preference of who is the judge at the time....we have a pair of medium colored buff sisters and they consistently share the BV title back and forth as one has a bigger crest but the other has a better body in width so a better breeder....you just never know...and they never like our rooster with the lighter comb but he has next to no smut and only a small amount of a bluish hint in a couple of tail feathers and he is of good type.....so go with what you like and breed for that shade.....Chris

Hi, What beautiful birds. I was wondering which color buff is supposed to be aiming for? Is it the darker more gold color or the lighter color? I think they are both beautiful but wondering what the goal would be?

Thank you Ultasol and Chris . I have both also and now that you explained the difference I understand what I'm seeing a little better . It wont be hard for me to decide .( I really like the red buff better than the light ) Now if the Roos are of good type and propper toe count and such ------ But has smut as it is called in his tail should you use him in breeding ? Or is it something you should try to avoid ? And where it is the Roo isn't it much harder to get a clear buff from the hatchlings ? Hope this isn't to bothersome -- ( Sap season here in Maine

And we love our Maple Syrup -- Keeps us very busy though ) Thanks again -- Tammy

I think it's really up to the breeder. As for my buffs (currently i have Buff orps and buff old english) I aim for the 24k gold color.

I have a little buff silkie pullet that is more of the darker gold color. I didn't know if she was a correct color or not. She is staying smaller than my other pullets.

Hi about the rooster with smut its near impossible to get a rooster who is 100 percent clear...apparently when they made the color standard for buffs it was made almost impossible to obtain the clear roos from what ive been told but you can clear girls even if daddy has some smut ...go for a rooster who only has some tail smut...i use a darker rooster on the lighter girls and our middle color rooster on the darker girls to try to get a happy medium....the chicks we just hatched from our own lines are looking very good so far only have one displaying smut out of 9 so will keep my fingers crossed they stay clear....hope this helps...as clear as smut...lol...a good book to try to get a hold of is the silkie book its expensive but really explains all this genetic stuff and has tons of photos.....

I believe there are 2 types of buff. One is wheaten and the other is partridge based, I think. The birds that are wheaten based tend to be lighter, little to no smut, lighter combs, eye color, etc. But the partridge based buffs will be a darker buff color, darker combs, eyes and will have smut.

Sundown, yours don't seem to have much smutt. The photos of your birds look great. It give me hope for my flock down the road. I love the light ones but I really like the deeper color of your as well. I guess if we continue to breed the Partridge Based birds to the Wheaten based birds we will eventually chase that black away for good, I hope.

Like I said it's up to the breeder, search buff color on here. The most important thing is a nice even color no matter the shade.
