Buff Silkie Thread!

PQ is short for "pet quality", sorry! BQ = breeder quality and SQ is show quality.

See some folks started their porcelain (which is officially called blue cream now) crossing lavenders (called self blue officially) and buffs and sometimes lavenders and blue partridge. This is my very non technical explanation. Here is the porcelain silkie thread if you want to scan through it. It isn't as long as some of the others and a lot of the pictures don't show up anymore, but you can get a better idea of what I am trying to explain. I personally like this color very much and want to breed more of it if I can.

The easiest way to get show quality chickens when you can't find them locally is take the chance on shipped eggs.

And here is the image search that I Googled. You will see some that are pretty dark and some that have quite a bit of red.

Thank you. He was such a good boy. That is such a sad shame about your pup. It makes me well up just reading it.
Told you I would feel stupid...lol..I knew that it was somthing simple..

Thank you for the thread, I will read through that :)

We miss him-- Jane has a tumor on her foot, showed up about 2 months ago--no changes and nothing bad from the biopsy--still nervous as can be about where this will go tho--

Smut refers to undercolour, not black in tail and/or wings. Part the body plumage and look for the undercolour. It SHOULD be buff, but in a smutty buff, it will be greyish. Anf in some birds it extends up into the outer feathers enough that it can be seen without searching the undercolour.
On my 'buff' girl, it is definitely not buff---more like a bluish color--It is not the same as either of my greys, more close to my blue roos--

Now on the otherhand, my hen that I thought was red, her undercolor is pretty much the same from top to bottom--maybe one shade lighter, but still the same color--

Have you tried the parent club website? Also look at online poultry show results and pick a breeder who is consistently winning.
Also, subscribe to the poultry Press newspaper. Many ads and show results there. ( website). if you only need one copy,

These are the only three varieties that I currently breed and raise. I am the Pennsylvania State Representative for the American Silkie Bantam Club. I can help you find breeders of other varieties of silkies if I don't have the colors you are looking for.

I had a white silkie rooster in with my hens. I got 2 eggs from my buff Orpington hens crossed with the white silkie rooster. They are in the incubator now. Will they be buff silkies???
