My friend is new to pigeons and wonders if you can get bugs/mites/scabies from them. I hope you can help advise me so I can tell him. They have children.
Thank you.

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

It is my understanding that mites and other external parasites are MOSTLY species specific. Poultry lice live on birds. And poultry mites are different than dog mites. Poultry also have 3 different types of lice... feather, body, and head. And several types of mites as well.

While you might get a mite or a louse on you.. they will not stay on a human host. So no you won't become infested.

Salmonella or e-coli is a bigger concern IMO... but I am still learning something new every day.

As a kid, we did get scabies once after visiting the mountains... I think. I remember treating with a lotion. Memories are vague though.

Not inviting other wild birds is a good way to help combat parasites, as mentioned. But make sure you don't forget those nasty rats that'll be coming around for the feed shrapnel. They are major spreaders of parasites and disease, not to mention bird PREDATORS!

But also, if you do need to treat your birds... Permethrin spray is highly effective, affordable, easy and safe to use. There is an organic version made from pyrethrums, a chrysanthemum extract that the synthetic permethrin is based on if organic is important to you, sold under names like Spinosad or Elector PSP for many more $. IMHO, organic poison is STILL poison. So I go with the synthetic version (for now).

Please note that while many of us talk about nasty red mites or lice, the fact is there are a few types that are completely microscopic and you will NEVER see them even if they are crawling up your arm right now. :sick

As far as I know you don't have to worry about catching round, hook, or whip worms. But I think people can catch tape worms and know they can get ring worm.

Hope your friend and their children enjoy their new birds! :)

Thank you so much for your quick and helpful reply. Will check the other threads you mentioned.

EggSighted4Life,
You answered everything and thanks so much. Just thinking about all those things made me itch. Had not even thought about rats. I have passed the info on and now they know what to do.

Permethrin is probably the most effective to treat already affected birds. I think they sell concentrates made for birds, that you water down and spray on the bird.

You can also dust them and their cage/loft in food grade diatomaceous earth, as well as offer them a bath treated with borax (they love baths, just offer them a container at least 18" diameter and 4-6" deep). Both kill parasites.

Dusting with diatomaceous earth and giving borax baths can be done as a preventative measure as well. I do it about weekly.

I have been raising birds for decades it has never been an issue for me personally.

I give my hens a combination of soil and wood ashes to dust bathe in.

My pigeon 5 gallons of water with 4 to 5 tablespoons of Borax to bathe in every Wednesday. They bathe in the bottom of a plastic 45 gallon barrel cut off about 12" from the bottom.

I got a very nasty case of feather mites.. my feathers were a mess.. and my legs got scaly leg mates so my scales stuck up.... not to mention when I got internal laying going on... ouch!

Seriously the bird parasites are only going to be in the pigeons.. they can't live on humans!!!! They don't need to worry. Keep them clean and tidy and healthy birds will take care of themselves and won't have a parasite infestation. If they get any mites its really easy to treat them with powder form the feed supply shop.

Tell your friend not to worry.
