Interesting thread. I'm definitly following. I know nothing about chicken genetics at all lol, and find your threads very interesting. I love watching the new breeds develop, its very cool. :pop
This is a really good idea. I like Turkey, but for those that don't this is a good idea.
Thanks.

This project won't happen until I'm done with my first two. This project is also gonna be a side project along with my Emerald Dragon new breed project.

.., My mom is my inspiration for this, since she hates Turkey. So I thought, why not make a Chicken, that has the size, & meatiness of one, without the Taste?
If size, meatiness, and taste are the important goals, why try to look like a turkey too? And early maturity. And jumbo eggs. Too many goals, too few results. Too many goals tend to fight each other.

No matter if you want to play with a bunch of exotic-ish breeds. But if you really want turkey replacement in size and meatiness with chicken taste, you are likely to get there faster with the head start of beginning with the results of many years of work (on a large scale) toward exactly that goal. In the Jersey Giant. Then work toward earlier maturity or larger eggs, if you wish.

Early maturity isn't a trait I want. Just the standard moderate maturity that's usually seen. Butcher at the 6-8 month mark.
I don't know where you see early maturity being mentioned on here?

The reason I want it to resemble a Turkey in appearance, is to make it stand out. Plus if it looks like a chicken, but not resemble a Turkey, I can't name it the Churkey.

From these the two comments in the picture below (if I managed the technology correctly) should have said earlier rather than early, I guess.

It was just a perspective, there is nothing wrong with starting where ever you want.

It had been a long time ince I looked up Jersey Giants, I looked them up again this morning. The reason they take so long is they grow frame and then fill out. Hm, I think they all do that. All, as in at least most species of mammal and bird. You may get the same result where ever you start.

Let us know how it turns out. :)

What about, start with turkeys and make them more like chickens? It will be easier since they are already big, good at free ranging, and have naked necks. If your mom doesn't like the taste of turkey, try heritage breeds which taste better.

I wanted to stand clear of the Cornish X, because they're hard to keep living, plus they have lots of competition with the other birds that are more agile.

Cornish X Naked Neck, wouldn't give me the size I want, plus that is the formula used for the creation of the Naked Chicken.

The idea is a 3ft tall Extra Meaty bird, that is also an egg layer. Not a production type layer though.
Hello, planning to create a new Duel Purpose breed, that will be Extra Meaty, lays Large to Jumbo Eggs, & looks like a Turkey.

This will most likely be a Side Project, but have to get the Naked Necks, & Cornish first.

Planning to use:

Cornish Games (For Meatiness, & Wideness)

Malay (For Large Size, heavy weight)

Naked Necks(For Naked Necks)

I know nothing about chickens. I have ducks. But I am a scientists and am intrigued by tour experiment. Please be sure and post updates!

I don't have the space for turkeys, & I don't know much about breeding turkeys.
