building a dinosaur from a chicken...

The toothy mouth might be a problem. I would be poorly suited for consuming the small particulate items that dominate the typical chickens diet. Larger fare would have to adopted and for around here (central Missouri) if such a critter were to free range, diet would likely be optimal if based on same things a roadrunner or wild turkey eats. Problem is for most vertebrate prey a roadrunner consumes, the unmodified parts of bird would be too slow to pursue. Critter would likely have to dump balance of flight gear (breast muscle).

I was thinking "what if they did it, made chickens with teeth and grasping hands..and then one got loose.... Oh we are in trouble". Wasn't that kind of the premise of Jurassic park the movie?
I think I like chickens just the way they are. Lol

I do not think they would survive as well as regular chickens in wild / feral setting. In a locations devoid of predators such as oppossoms, racoons, foxes, hawks and owls they could hold their own.

A lot more modifications needed to make it invasive.

I think the purpose of the tinkering is to find out which genes are responsible for the differences between birds and their dinosaur ancestors. The more we find out, the less profound those differences seem to become.

There are some differences not being addressed. Most birds have a lot of mass tied up in flight muscle. The mandibles which presently lack teeth are broader in the ancestral dinosaur lineage birds belong to. Flexibility of fore limbs and hind limbs as needed to climb trees is limited in chicken. When I see a typical small dino that is just a few steps from being a chicken, I see a bipedal fox built for sustained running with ability to climb a tree like a racoon or tree dwelling kangaroo. The chicken skeleton would be need to be loosened up to be like that.

WOW - thanks for posting this link!!! I am new to chickens and was just reminded of Jurassic Park the other days while watching my hens. They would run up to each other, stand tall and puff out the feathers around their neck. It reminded me of the scene were the Dilophosaurus frills out in the car before attacking "Dennis". (thankfully, the chickens didn't spit goo at each other

They will never find the genes to make a dinosaur from a chicken, because they are not there! Trust me. They look like that they are related, but they are not. I love dinosaurs, and have been fascinated by them since when I was a small child. I know that dinosaurs and chickens were designed by the same creator, and that is why some looks similar to each other, but are separate species. Like us with the apes, we look alike, almost the same body function, but are totally different species, and cannot cross and reproduce.

The idea that all living things were created within a span of a few days, each independent of another, is refuted by mountains of evidence. We have learned much about the planet and outer space that contradict what was said in the bible. For example, we know that the following assertions are not true:

1) The Earth is a flat disk in shape, like a dinner plate, and rests upon mountain pillars. There is also a mountain tall enough that from its peak, one can see the whole world -- possible only on a flat earth. (Isa. 40:22; Job 26:10; Prov. 8:26-27; Matthew 4:8; Job 26:11; Psalm 75:3)

2) The sun revolves around the flat Earth. (Joshua 10:12-13)

3) A metal dome, translated the “firmament” in the KJV, separates the sky from the chaos waters beyond. Holes in the metal dome let rain in — in other words, the sky is a giant, upside-down colander. (Genesis 1:6; Job 22:14; 2 Esdras 6:41)

4) The stars are little lights in the sky that are capable of falling to Earth like meteorites. (Matthew 24:29)

5) One day can last 930 years. (Genesis 2:16-17 against Gen. 5:3-4)

6) Rabbits and hares chew their cuds, just as cows do. (Lev. 11:6; Deut. 14:7)

7) Pi equals exactly three. (1 Kings 7:23)

8) Some birds walk on four legs (Lev 11:20-21)

...to name but a few. I do hope that you also challenge people who say the earth is spherical, that it revolves around the sun, that there's no shell up in the sky (which, I suppose, means that space shuttles don't have to carefully navigate through one of this shell's many holes), that the stars we see in the night sky are truly light-years away from us, etc. People who believe these things are also doing so against that which the bible states.

The bible is not a science book. It is a collection of stories considered to be holy by those who follow the book. Those who don't follow the book read it as mythology. If you want to hold it up against science, then it must be subject to the same tests which science uses.
