Building a Sizeable Chook Shed - 4.5m x 4.5m (approx 15ft x 15ft)

I take a lot of heat from my husband about my excessive coop building - now I am showing him your amazing setup and telling him I could be worse!! You have done an incredible job - so nicely designed, sturdily built, and I love your colors. And this is a great location!

Haha! Our initial plans were nowhere near as ambitious, but due to its location (near the entrance to our property) we decided it needed to at least look nice. It kind of grew from there

.

Anyways, we look at it like this: some people play golf, some people go boating, some people go on month long trips to Europe - we built a chook shed

Your coop is looked great! We are planning on converting a large shed into a coop so your ideas are very helpful

I like that you put it up off the ground. A lot of people don't realize the benefit of shade in the summer and protection from overhead predators. When temps were hitting 105 degrees F. last summer, my chickens spent the better part of the days under the shed with the earth to cool them and plenty of bugs.

Can it be closed up during cold weather?

We have made it so that underneath the coop can be accessed or closed off. We may keep it available to the chickens under there in winter as the soil under there will probably keep a bit drier than out in the run. In winter there will be a number of shutters on the coop that we will close on all but the northern side. The open air front will remain open, although we may put up another piece of laserlite if we feel it gets too cold or if too much precipitation from low cloud gets in - normal rain shouldn't be a problem.
