I apologize for hijacking this thread to talk about lumber, but I'm actually really enjoying this discussion and learning new things. Maybe, in addition to different mills doing it differently, climate plays a role in the final lumber size, too. Boston is really humid in the summer, and really dry in the winter. So much so that the doors inside my house swell in the summer to where they barely fit inside their frames, and in the winter they shrink so much that there's a gap and the latch no longer reaches the other side, so the doors won't stay closed. That's a significant size difference, especially since I have central air in the house. Outside it's worse. So maybe I'm just getting "summer wood" now and it's just bigger...

I'm also really enjoying following this thread in general. The construction is coming along really nicely, and motivating me to go work on my own, too.

No apology necessary . Local climate does indeed play a role in milled timber dimensions . I build solid body guitars as a hobby , I use a CNC to mill the bodies , neck , parts etc out of various species of wood . It always amazes me how much wood moves with the seasons and how much it can move just by fly cutting the surface off a few thousandths of an inch . And this is with Kiln or air dried wood thats been in climate controlled area for years .
Thanks for the kind feedback on the thread , I am enjoying it also . I am anxiously awaiting updates in your thread as well .

:)
I haven't had a chance to work on it this week, so no updates yet. Too much other stuff to do. But I really want to finish it before the fall rains start, so, hopefully, I'll post updates soon! I've been able to build everything on my own so far, but I'm gonna need to get my husband and at least one more person to help me stand the frames up and carry them across the yard to their final resting place. Those things weigh a ton, especially the 8'x7' walls.

Getting close!

Not close enough :barnie:D
Late next week I am going to spend a week with my son and daughter in law and grandson and the maternal grandparents as well , up in the Catskills , son and family coming from Phoenix , his inlaws coming from Minnesota . My daughter ordered the chicks today , they ship week of Oct 14th (4 week olds) . I'll only be able to get siding done before I leave so I'll be busy when I get back . Roofing , trim , hardware cloth , doors , hardware . Glad I'm retired .

Have to say it... but this would be a good place to have a huge vent,
like all HC instead of siding.
It's up high and protected the by run roof.

My plan is not to put a prefabbed gable vent in that gable facing into the run , I will cut and trim out a hardware cloth vent in that spot . It won't be the whole gable end but it will be a bit more substantial than a prefabbed vent .
