Building My First Coop

Thanks . Yes , the windows are easy to install and the vendor is a good one .
I'm retired and still can't find the time to squeeze everything in :)
Same here. I always have something to do so no chance of getting bored. I do get a little overwhelmed with all the work at times. But since my little dog passed, the chickens get me going in the morning and I get my chores done. :)

Most everything looks great, I can tell you want it to last and your chickens be secure. Are the 2x4s in the trusses treated as well as the posts? The only thing I would have done different would to have put the top plate on top of the post, instead of in between them, and lapped the corners like in houses constriction. That's a Lot of Weight up there to only be supported by a couple of jack scabs/ledger scabs (not jack studs because they don't reach floor). It's just me but I would put some 1/2" x 6" or 8" bolts thru those scabs. I wouldn't trust 16d nails to hold that roof up long term. Other than that it looks like a great job. You should be proud of yourself. :thumbsup

Thank you . The 2x4 trusses are not pressure treated . I was going to pick up some 1/4" lags for those jack scabs but I like your idea of 1/2" through bolts better so I will do that . I don't know why I didn't set the top plate on top of the posts , and I remember thinking about it but went with the jack scabs anyway . Thanks for the good suggestion .

Got both windows in today

Also got the back wall framed and started siding . It will be one 2' wide door right of center line for entry /cleaning. It got too dark to get any pictures of the back but I'll post one tomorrow .

OK, but mounted sideways? If so, will it shed water properly?

According to the place I bought them from they say they'll be fine mounted sideways . There is no sill to speak of on the outside of these windows , they look like they'll shed water adequately . I don't anticipate any issues with them but they are not a high quality window like an Anderson or a Marvin , for a shed or coop I think they will work fine mounted sideways . If not I'll report back on them and and try something else .

I'm glad you feel that way. I wasnt wanting to come down on you. I just have seen others do that to have it fall later. Use some large washers with the bolts and sandwich them good. They should stay a while. :highfive:
