Chickkat, no unfortunately I did not build the coop myself. I hired a bunch of guys to come and do it for me.

I'm the only one who builds stuff in my house, and I knew I couldn't do something that large by myself. (At least not quickly, and not without a lot more tools!)

I was going to insulate mine, but then I talked with a gal who lives near us that has had chickens for years. She said when they built their first coop, they insulated it. And after two years, they heard stuff crawling around behind the wall boards. They opened up a corner and peeled one of the boards back, and a ton of mice spilled out towards them. There was apparently an infestation of hundreds of live mice in the insulation. They ripped all of it out and have not had any in there since. Their chickens have been just fine all year round, and we had some seriously extreme negative numbers last winter.

Thank you AVandrie, opa and hensdeliverthegoods!!

Yes it really was my first attempt. The only other thing I've ever made from scratch was a bookcase.

They look really nice MichiganWoods!

i have a question though, on the rollout nests, dont you just put a rubber mat type thing in there so the eggs can roll out? Won't straw block it from rolling out? I'm getting ready to build a couple nest boxes
too so I've been looking at all I can. Your's look great!

:)That is or looks like a steep incline. You might want to put some foam rubber on the bottom of the incline. So the eggs won't crack or break when they land at the bottom.

Thanks!

I left enough room with the boards to add a small layer of straw/hay, but I'll have to play around with it and see. Just cutting rubber mats might work better. Adding foam rubber isn't a bad idea.

Am I the only one who can't really figure out how this works? Are the eggs supposed to roll into the tray? And then what is the lid for?
Sorry, I'm confused
