Mulch, not wood chips, shredded pine bark, wood chips would not be nice, if you had to , playground chips are rounded and large. Mulch is quite soft, check out the offerings at home depot in the garden department, or if you are lucky enough to have an Abuchon Hardware near you they have a great selection, but that is more of a New England thing.
