building paradise for the birds

Just out of curiosity - what happens to the chicks you got since you can't start a breeding stock with them? Will you sell them as nonbreeders to try & get some money recouped?

im going to grow them out...i spoke to a couple of breeders with cemani...and they said the ones that have clear toes will actually grow out to look normal but the ones with the whites will stay pretty white....so just hoping for the best and i did get a email from them before i sent this last email...and not to great of a response for the birds they sent...so maybe they will change the response in the next email...its hard to not buy from them cause they are one of the few that actually imported the birds...you know..but i just wish i would have gotten a good order from the start...if they would have put a heat pad in the first time i would have the original birds...but thats just my thoughts...as im not the only one that got shipments from them that week that were dead...and im sure that was the case cause some that i spoke to are from colder climates......i knew which pens the birds came from on the first batch...they didnt let me know which pens these ones came from so alittle bummed out i cant track the lineage of them...as i would have liked to have a pedigree for the birds...makes things easier to track when you know where they came from and such....anyways...the car got fixed we just took it for a drive....i got about four hours of sleep for the last five nights so feeling weak and not good right now....hope i feel better as im supposed to pick up a bunch of eggs from the michigan swap tomorrow in imlay city, mi....ahhhhh....anyways sorry not pics...but the quail cages came in today as well...so been building them from gqf and wow there is so many nutz and bolts....its going to take some time...im also shocked at the instructions for something so big....very plain with virtually no descriptions...on one piece of paper...anyways..have a good night....

Tomorrow will be better....

Definitely some rest. Glad you got the car up a running. There always going to be room to see the good in the bad. As these new birds grow we'll see how they look long term, hope your communication with gff ends positively at this point there are a lot of eyes on this situation and a lot of opinion behind it.
Best of luck as always

ok well today went great so far....we went to the bird swap in imlay city...and im pretty picky when it comes to stock....but no wonder y there is so much bird sickness going around....we seen all sorts of birds in horrible conditions...some actually looked ill...and they sold them to people for top dollar for a bird...my girl and i both agreed if i would bring my birds to something like that...one they would blow the competition out of the water...and two i couldnt buy at one of these swaps bc of the conditions of the birds...they had birds with no tails, blood running down their faces, sick, leg mites, bald backs on some of the birds....and people were buying them...crazy but true..cutlersupply was there....i would have bought stuff from them they are my go to for supplies but we made it back in time for the local amish store so that is were my business went...just got back...the quail frame is done..now to just tighten up some things and put the pens in and move the birds...also picked up a bunch of eggs from a friend down there...and that is the only thing i got there...really a shame on the quality of the birds at this swap...this was the first and might be the last..i dont need to get my birds sick..bc i went to one of these swaps.....there was only one person that i would have bought from down there...good display, knows their stock and information, and is actually on the board of the mbgba...so i got their business card for future business...

well be back with more pics....gotta get caught up

I went to the swap. Most the good birds sold early I was told. I did walk away with two healthy bantam hen but yes many of the birds were not that great. I seen Spicers there and talked to him. He is so high on his prices for the most part. I can get as good quality birds from a few others for cheaper. I have had a friend buy from him and the hen turned out in bad shape. Might have been a fluke bet never know. He did have some beautiful birds though. I was very picky though. Always am picky when I go to swaps. If they dont look healthy and the cages fairly clean as well as the seller then I dont bother. Its not worth my time or my flocks health. I left there and went to a small animal auction over in Clare and seen some fair stuff but still nothing to impressive. No peas at the auction. But yes if you go to sell your birds at a place then why wouldnt you have them in top condition when your selling. They should look pristine. I was also dissapointed in the prices of the birds. Seen a black shoulder pair their that looked so bad. The hens back end was a mess. I felt so bad for them. No way would give what they wanted. I would have had to quarantine for months just to feel comfy about the health of the bird. I will go to Clares swap in August. I seen better quality there.

was that black shoulder pair on the ground on the left side...towards the main road...if so....she was def...ill..her eyes were half closed....her wings droopy...i was really shocked...i also talked to spicer....and found out he is on the board of the mbgba....

anyways we have about two hundred birds to hatch out the beginning of may...getting excited...and setting a bunch tonight...silver golden, peach golden, lady amherst, yellow golden, red golden, cinnamon goldens, blue ringnecks, and impeyans...wow that sure is alot....and i might have another 12 cinnamon goldens coming from another breeder....really expanding...still no word from gff...i hope they dont take that as a bad email however...what was i supposed to do..not say anything when the first one was so much different then the second one....see what makes it even worse...when on the cemani thread there was an individual that made a comment about gff and there stock and what happened to their stock ....which wasnt true...i made a call letting gff know to correct it if it was wrong...within five minutes gff...surely did that....and then i got my order a month early and they were perfect birds...then when they had to send a replacement ...i pretty sure i got what i got for a reason...but doesnt it seem weird...it does me...i dont know with these two types of birds...its been such a pain in the arse...that it is almost not enjoyable to even have them...ive spent more time trying to figure things out then actually enjoying the birds...i just hope that in the future i can experience some positive for having them in my flock considering how much was invested...anyways...enough blabbering..on with the night....got the quail cages completely done..so in the morning im transfering over the remaining birds....and the ones that dont make weight will be sold to someone right down the road...off to the chicken cage robin....hahhaha..night everyone....im pooped
