Building The Perfect Back Yard Flock - Different Colored Eggs

Quote:
MyPet Chicken could probably get you your rainbow layers in small numbers, but you might have to wait a while until all are ready at the same time. And they might not ever be ALL ready at the same time....
I waited an estra month to get Buff Orps, Americaunas, and 2 different colored Silkies. The Silkies were on back-order.

I never gave much consideration to the variety of colors that my hens would produce when they were purchased or ordered. However, my DH and myself are quite please with the idea that we will have most colors and sizes from our group. We currently have brown egg layers but the RIW produce darker eggs than the NHR. Our BSL pullets will be laying here in about another week or two and then come late September or early October we will have white, brown and EE colors that only time will tell. Of course I'm not sure how big the Crested Polish eggs will be nor the Spitzhauben.

I could not resist.

Seriously though, if you have to order a few here and there it's still worth it to have your hearts desire. Aren't we all constantly improving our flock over the years? As far as implementation, maybe split orders or find individual breeders? Sometimes getting everything at once is not all it's cracked up to be.

I ordered only 4 chicks, of all different breeds from Meyer Hatchery in OH. Of course I got the "Fee" for not ordering more than 25, but I got what I wanted.
I got Black Austrolorp ( who we LOVE ) she's all black but so friendly!
A Delaware
A Silver laced Wyandotte
A Barred Rock
and a Mystery chick! ( who as a little one looked just like the SLW )
They are only 4 weeks now so I still have no idea what breed the extra is.

Ypu can get your whole list at Meyer, However they are sold out of Marans for 2007, and Just looked at site and cant think ofthe other DARK egg layer Barnvelder? Faveroule you have to wait till 9/11 but if you plan to do this next year it is doable from one hatchery. Checked couple of sites and all were out of Marans

I'm patient (actually I'm not, but we're already full of chickens).

Soooo... that means I can wait for the stars to align such that I can buy all my breeds from one source.

Again, I just need to make sure they are nice, pretty, good layers, and different color eggs. I mean...how hard could that be?

Mrs. AK BirdBrain here...
We have a light brahma that lays a light brown egg that is the sweetest thing ever. She, along with our black australorp (dark brown glossy egg), has been the most consistent layers, and I can always tell them apart. I can tell the difference in the brown breeds once I catch one laying an egg that I can identify. It was my mistake to get 6 barred rocks, and I don't know who lays what. I marked a couple of them with blue-cote on their tails when I caught them in a nest! Now I have speckled purple hens running around!

We have bantams, americaunas, the brahma, australorp, new hampshire, wt leghorns (they're friendly, too) oh, and a buff orpington that's consistent too. We got all of our hens from the same feed store, so I'm sure you'll be able to find a hatchery that sells all different breeds.
Good luck, and happy brooding!!
