Great post title, I know

My little polish has been having trouble since we got the chicks (almost 2 weeks ago) with paste butt. I've been checking him multiple times a day and trying to keep it clean, but it gets nasty quick over night (maybe I should try to wake up at night and check him?) Anyway, his anus (vent??) is bulging...tonight I soaked his bottom in warm water and got it nice and clean then oiled him up with vegetable oil to try and help keep it from sticking so much over night. Anything else I can/should do?? I have an empty cage right now since i moved the meat birds to a bigger space, should I seperate him while it heals?? Thanks!

If you lubed him up really good he should be fine. You may want to lube the feathers around the vent too, to keep the poo from sticking. I wonder if he needs some Preparation H if he's bulging?

Can you clip all of the fuzz away from his bottom??? Sometimes that helps tremendously. Have you seen others pecking at his bottom or are you just trying to make sure that it doesn't start to happen by separating him?? If there's no picking, I'd probably leave him. But I'd definitely separate if I saw any pecking going on.

I haven't witnessed any pecking, but he's significantly smaller than the ones he's in with (buff orpingtons and black giants), so idk.

It's getting better, but now instead of it obviously being poop, it looks like a bloody scab. I'm cleaning and oiling it a few times a day but it's still protruding. It's quite obvious when I look at all the others' vents how much it's bulging (theirs are nice and flat and his looks like uh, one of those weird blue gel tubes you used to play with as a kid, if ykwim!!). A couple others have had some pasting, but not nearly as bad as this little guy (or girl, lol) and no one else has any bulging. I'm giving them all oatmeal every day too, my friend's mom said that can help with the pasting.

I'm not sure if he's gotten like chicken hemmhoroids from straining? Is that possible?? Because it's kind of bloody but there aren't any obvious wounds when I clean it.

Oh and he is pretty much bare all around his vent already (which i thought was odd too because the others aren't). The scabbing is just all over the vent now and not around it.

I'd get him out of there. You need to be able to watch him constantly. How old is this bird? Are you sure it's a male? You may not observe it, but he may be getting attacked. A sick bird, particularly a small vulnerable one, can be killed easily by a standard breed.

What are you feeding? I realize it's nice to give them and assortment but I only give mine Medicated Chick starter and water w/ sugar. Nothing else is necessary. No vitamins, treats etc. etc. I wait until they are much older before introducing treats and then gradually not everday and in small amounts. Their system needs to get used to the change. Even in older birds you want to gradually make the change. Even if it's one brand of layer to another. Mix the two and gradually wean off the old brand. Stick to the same brand as regular.

Something else you may want to try is a little hemorrhoid cream such as Preparation H.. It seems to help with prolapse.. just put a little bit on his vent..

These were just on the first page if you do a search for preparation H.. I'm sure you could find a lot more if you searched for hemorrhoid cream..
