Bully Hen Separated

This is really helpful... i had to separate a bloodied pecked orpington today.

She gets regularly bullied by the one that’s pecked her.

I sprayed her wounded area with Antimicrobial spray and have her in a crate in the coop overnight So she can start to heal, but i wish i had crated the bully instead.

She’s had a rough molt, looks kind of pale and droopy for ~2 weeks. Now this.

Separating her makes me feel like i’m adding insult to injury. Its in the 20s tonight.

Any advice on managing the two of them?

Is hiding the bully away to reduce her status effective? How long can she be separated? I’d have to keep her in the house in a crate to really hide her away.

I’ll get them some activities set up tomorrow to distract, but i’m not optimistic.

Help?
(Thanks)

Thanks @aart — what a huge help to read. I am feeling better after the night -- she seems ok still, i put a small chick jug of water in the dog crate and am leaving it in the run -- she can see everyone but is protected.

I'm all stocked up on ideas and stuffs to start to entertain the bully (she does seem to leave everyone else alone -- making that article more spot on...) Hopefully a few days of healing and being left in peace will help.

She wants out, but she'll just have to deal with the crate for a few days. Going to try to keep her separate until Saturday and then spend all weekend watching to see if she's good. I have to be out of town Mon-Tue for work, so, fingers crossed that I don't come back to a blood bath I guess?

Thanks again!

Hi there, I have a bully hen separated right now. Once the head hen started to molt she tried to take over. I bought a second coop that I got on clearance and set it up just incase I had a situation like this. So the bully is living in there now. I tried reintroducing the bully to the other two girls but she goes right for the smaller bird every time. It’s pretty frustrating.
