If bumble foot is cut open and the thick hard stuff is removed, can it grow back if the infection is still present? Also, batryl was given as an antibiotic and at 10 days, be developed diarrhea and it was discontinued. Anyone know of a better antibiotic that won't cause the diarrhea?
Thanks for any help.

Baytril is rough on the guts. Probiotics are recommended with Baytril. I am not an expert, some have used Duramycin-10. Don't know if Tylan would be any good for that.

If the cause of the bumble - like a splinter - is still in the foot, the infection won't go away. There are drawing salves and potato bandages. Epsom salt compresses have some drawing effect (remember E.s. is a laxative do not let the duck ingest any).

Also if you have cut the foot - and sometimes that seems the best thing to do - it is now open for infection, and as tough as it is, the foot needs to be kept out of the poo and the mud till it heals over.

Regular baths - no soap - in lukewarm water for half an hour at a time can help soften tissue, then a few drops of clear iodine. Yes, there is clear iodine. After several days the clear iodine has been seen to form a dark spot, which, when soaked thoroughly, can be gently pulled off, bringing some of the pus with it.

Here is a post from Haunted55

On July 1st, I found one of my Pekin ducks with what I would consider a bad case of Bumblefoot. Both feet were involved and I'm ashamed to say, the only way I found it was she was limping. One foot had 7 and the other had 3. I was able to grab her and bring her into the house and put her into a warm bath to clean and soak. Two water changes later and softened feet, all I had time to do was paint the bumbles with colorless iodine, grabbed the wrong stuff, and put her into a dog crate in my house until I could get everything ready to operate and get them gone. Did I mention the thought of this scared me half to death?

Sad to say it took 6 days before i was able to get everything together and someone to help out with the 'cure'. The following pictures are what we found after the bath we gave before the planned surgery to remove these things.

As can be seen, there really wasn't much to operate on, even though I was prepared to do just that. No matter how much squeezing or prodding or soaking, there just wasn't anything more to come out, it was all on the scabs that were covering the sores. The swelling was down from the 'marbles' I saw when I first found them. I poured betadine over the ones I had opened and painted the ones that I hadn't again with the iodine and put her back into her crate with clean bedding.

the next pictures are of the same Pekin and anothe duck, Dottie the Mallard, who was also found limping.

As can be seen in the first two pictures, the bumbles have been dramatically reduced on the Pekin with just the iodine application and the smaller ones totally gone. The last four pictures are of the Mallard who is still under going the iodine applications.

As can be seen, this is how the left and right foot look tonight on the Pekin duck. The heels being the worst are still showing infection and need for more treatment. tomorrow, I will again give a bath and pull/cut out the scabbing and treat with straight iodine this time. These spots are now flat or as flat as they should be considering the part of the foot they are on. I will still touch up the places that had the spots before as well.

Thank you so much for the detailed information. So far, there has been about 5-6 huge pieces. That's why I was wondering if they could form that fast. Simply doesn't seem like there is an end to this stuff. Do you think Clindamycin would work for an antibiotic that wouldn't upset her stomach?
Thanks, again!

Don't know about the Clindamycin, I would definitely get some probiotics.

If there is something in the foot, then it may well keep producing some yuck. Do you have drawing salve or could you put a potato bandage on the foot, or get a vet to help find and remove something that may be in the foot?

I don't know what a potato bandage is, but I'm going to try putting the iodine sugar poultice on it tomorrow. I can also get amoxicillin. Do you think the amoxicillin is good to use for this?

The procedure above was tried on numerous occasions. Everytime, there were more of the yellowish hard crinkled looking pus. This doesnt seem to want to go away. Yesterday, when the foot was lanced, it bled so bad, it required three stitches. We are literally at our wits end. Her leg is still incredibly swollen, and it appears to have spread to her bone. I can't even imagine cutting this foot open again. I'm going to buy some of the tricide listed in the above article, and after that....... Don't know!!
All the articles sound great, but none of them address what to do when bleeding goes bazerk!
