Hey y'all! I have 2 white leghorns I'm treating for bumblefoot. I brought them in and soaked in Epsom salt, poked, and prodded... eventually I had to use a scalpel to slice it. Poked and prodded and the core came out. I'm hoping we got out all the yuck.. Made sure everything was wiped down and sterile.

I followed up with Vetericyn spray, duoderm cgf pad, and vet wrap. They are isolated from the rest of the flock to recoup. I also have some Baytril oral meds.

Question... one of them the infection has spread pretty good. Is there anything that I can do for the top of her foot, or will taking out the plug and treating it relieve the swelling/infection?

Thank you in advance for your help! Have a Happy New Year!

With bumble you have to get the core of pus out or the infection will keep reccuring (even with antibiotics). I would clean the plug out, flush the foot good and put ointment in it. Then wrap and give oral antibiotics as well.

Yes! I believe the whole core came out, I didn't see any sack or any yuck left. I didn't flush, but thank you for that! I was just wondering if the swelling on top of her foot will give way since the core had been removed? Or if I need to delve into taking care of that too?

Oh sorry, I didn't realize you'd already removed the core. The swelling should go down now that the pus is out. Just make sure you're cleaning it frequently since chickens tend to get a lot of gunk in their bandages (hay/mud/bedding/dirt) which can worsen the infection.

Now since I didn't flush it... should I try to do that tomorrow? Or just leave it be and let it heal?

You can flush it out tomorrow, since you'll have to clean it again anyway. Try to get some antibiotic ointment in it too (without pain relief in it).
Thank you for your help! I'll attach a screenshot of what I have... it is a spray... Vetericyn. I did also put a patch to keep protected and a wrap. Should I also keep ointment too?

Yep, vetericyn is perfect 😁. Sounds like you've got everything covered! If the swelling doesn't go down and it's still inflamed, let us know here and someone can help (or go to a vet).
