Thanks to all the Backyard posters here and YouTube Videos, I recognized bumblefoot in my 1 year old rescue Jumbo Pekin female. I was surprised that such a tiny calcified/keratinized area could lead to so much swelling.
I soaked her for about 15 minutes in the sink, then slowly worked on the scab (no pictures). The "core" is shown, and when I went to squeeze it it picked me, I assumed it was sharp calcified tissue. Lo and behold it's a tiny filament of stiff wire! Everything I've read on this site and others confirms you may find a thorn or object within the core. I saw no pus or other matter but will keep observing.
She's resting now, and since a drake runner and regular Pekin are after her so much, she will get her own quarters.
Thanks, guys, for all your information on this. I applied polysporin and elastic wrap, but I'm not sure how well it will keep. I get icky chills just thinking of that sharp wire in my foot.
Take care,
June
