Bumblefoot

Hello, Is this Bumblefoot? The bump is hard, but there really is no scab to pull off. Should I cut into it or continue soaking? Thanks. Apple Pie seems ok, but does have a slightly limp. Thanks for any and all advice.

Could be is that a small hole in the center. No sign of splinter? Are you soaking in Warm Epsom salt water? you can also after soaking use clear iodine over that area if there is infection in there[bumble] the clear can help bring it to the surface. Cutting should be last resort.

My ducks had a bumblefoot infection that looked like that - what I did was I soaked in epsom salt and warm water, and used (wearing gloves) a razor blade to gently scrape over the scab, not to open it up but just to create a bit of a looser scab, then sprayed with Vetericyn Poultry Care Spray by Plus and covered with gauze, and Vet wrap. That helped calm it down a bit - but in the end they did have little "corn kernals" of bumblefoot that I needed to cut but thankfully it was in scab tissue so it didn't bleed, just pulled out. Then continued with the Vetericyn, gauze, and vet wrap for a week for it to heal.

Thank you for your advice. I did scrap off the top, it bled a lot. I sprayed the open wound with saline solution, vetricyn spray, packed with bacitracin and wrapped with gauze and vet wrap. I kept her inside for 24 hrs and then rebandaged and sent her back outside with her duck sisters. I have now noticed a scab forming that is brown not black. Hoping it will heal. Should I continue Epsom salt soaks or leave it alone? I’ll try to get another picture later today. Thanks so much

I am still waiting for the clear iodine to come in the mail (we live in a small Alaskan town), once it gets here I will try your iodine method. Thanks Miss Lydia

You're doing everything right so far! It's an arduous process, what I did was while it was healing I'd bring my ducks in every other day, take the bandage off, do a warm soapy water soak with Epsom salts just to really keep the area clean. Then repeat what you are already doing and put them back out. As the wound heals I don't soak it for long, just long enough to wash it down and if the gauze sticks to the healing skin, long enough for that to pull off without issues. I had one of our ducks that had a really narrow but deep sore and bled like crazy when just trying to clean the healing wound. You never want to put them back out with an actively bleeding area, you want to apply pressure until that stops, then bandage it up. Good luck and keep at it!

Thank you guys as well for posting (especially about the clear iodine). My new seramas that I picked up today have a minor/early case of bumblefoot. The roos feet are just swollen. Hen has a small scab. Thankfully I had read about bumblefoot last night and knew how to identify it, and my friend ran me through the quick list of what I need to do to treat, but I wanted to make sure we didn't miss anything. Off to buy clear iodine now.
