Gooood morning from mud!! We’ve discovered a new method which is burying the tablet in a blueberry which is much more nutritious for him and.. not so much of a hassle for me 😁 he’s outside now having his strict 1 hour with the others before he comes back in for his soak.
I’m so glad it’s working. He looks to be enjoying himself

Okay now I’m in need of some advice I’ve been up crying half the night. The vet said she wants to do surgery to remove some of the necrotic tissue and that worst case scenario it’ll be £675 for an hours worth of anaesthetic or £430 for just the half hour. I live by myself on a minimum wage job and I’m just in a rut I don’t have the finances. Today his middle toe doesn’t seem as swollen but now he’s began to wheeze a little so I’m thinking of trying to get some baytril somehow. Can you tag anyone who can offer any advice? I don’t know what to do and I don’t want to lose him under any circumstances. I could justify putting him to sleep if he were not walking or eating or drinking but that’s not the case, Theres life in this old (actually young) duck yet. Please help!!

I have a chicken that I have been doing the exact same thing as you have been doing. She has improved dramatically and now doesn't have to the surgery by the vet. The vet first thought if she didn't have the surgery she would die. But, we of course first tried the antibiotics way just in case it helped. It was working, but did not change that much until we removed the plug as we could feel it under the scab. We tried to get most of it out (it was huge!). The swelling between the toes went down a lot. We took her back to the vet. The vet removed some more tissue and suggest to aerate the scab, by taking it off each day on top of the antibiotics and foot soaks. It is now a nice brown scab and is healing up nicely.

If you are confident with performing the surgery yourself you can do it as long as you are okay with the chance of seeing a bit off blood. Read up about it and then perform it. If you really don't want to do it yourself which by all means is okay, the other option is to ask your vet to continue what you are doing now. Just know it may worsen quickly. Regarding the surgery, I would suggest allowing yourself lots of time and being well equipped/prepared. Good luck. :)

Do you have any advice on what equipment I would need? At the moment I’ve been bathing him in iodine and epsom salt, drying him off, using vetericyn spray, applying silver gel and then putting his little duck booties on. The antibiotic I struggled getting down him it was almost impossible but yesterday the vet gave me a little syringe and a tube to ensure he was getting most of the antibiotic. Was your case as severe as this? In the cartilage? I don’t mind blood whatsoever, I just don’t want it to manifest anymore than what it has already. :( thank you for the reply!

Well, the vet desibribed her a as a case with 'severe absesses'. Too do an operation at first she said they would have too go down too the bone. Vet - rap and tripple antibiotic cream is good. I have a cream called Chlorhexidine leave - on lotion which I got from the vet. You could ask your vet if they have any. As well as gauze pad to put on with the lotion. Then rap with vet - rap making sure it is not too tight, but tight enough that it won't come off. You have mentioned that you have a booties for him. I would put them on top of the vet - rap. Re - rap every day if you can, kepping it clean. As well as an epson salt soak for at least 10 minutes and a 1% betadine souloution towl soak for at least another 20 minutes. For the surgery I would recomend tweezers and cotton wool to mop up any bood that comes out, just in case. Hope your duck gets better soon. I have nearly eradicated bumble foot from my flock since seeing it now about 6 months ago (a late christmas present seemingly), so feel your pain.

Here is a picture of her foot after doing the antibiotics for a bit. It was originally a bit more puffed up and red looking. Will try to find the photo before doing antibitiocs and soaking tomorrow and get a picture of it now. Note the swelling between the toes.

Attempting tonight! Have everything clean and sterile and ready, his leg also doesn’t seem hot to the touch which tells me the antibiotics must finally be entering his system and the wheezing from yesterday has now stopped, I’m feeling hopeful for the first time in a week 😌 will keep you both posted!

How did it go?
Sorry I didn't get back to you about the pictures, will try to do that today.
