Bumblefoot?

Re: antibacterial salve question ~ After our vet did surgery on our first bumblefoot hen he gave us antibacterial ointment to put on the wound & wrap daily. There naturally was blood on his surgical wraps of her feet but it was healing well after that first bandage change & we applied ointment once every day keeping a cottonball over the wound then bandaged the feet. Epsom soak, dry w/paper towel, apply antibacterial ointment w/cottonball (later years we switched to flat round cotton makeup pads), & wrap ~ next day repeat, next day etc. We were so new to bumblefoot & had visions of "losing" her but she healed so well.

I wish I had experience w/pus infected bumblefoot but we never had a case like your hen w/ the white swollen infection so I don't want to mis-advise but it seems logical that an infection not only needs topical treatment but oral antibiotics also for any infection entering the bloodstream? At that point I probably would bite the bullet & pay the vet fee for the proper treatment & prescriptions. Only cuz I wouldnt know what to do at that point.

And yes, it's a shame breeders are formulating hybrid layers or hybrid meat birds w/ shortened lifespans & health problems. Makes me so mad
but I digress :mad: !

Anyway, I just wanted to say prayers 🙏 for you (& your birdies) & bless you for caring & loving on these precious hens 🤗
Thank you! You think its entering her blood stream? What makes you think that and what antibiotics do I need to get?

Now Im worried, it does not seem to be puss filled, but im going to try the drawing salve, do you think that will help?

The roosting bars are both clean and smooth, as we painted them.
We dont use any bedding, but when winter starts we put down pine shavings.

The only reason im not sure its bumblefoot, is because it does not have like a hole I guess for a infection to get in. My thought is a blister, because its been really rainy and muddy lately. I just want to be sure if its bumblefoot or not.
It looks like bumblefoot. As Wyorp Rock suggested with the link provided, soak, medicate and wrap.
I can tell you we treated a hen with double bumble foot this way and it took 9 weeks to completely cure / heal her, so be patient, as it might not be a one and done situation. If wrapped properly, she should be able to walk and forage as normal. The one additional thing we did was put VetRx on the area before wrapping. You may never know what caused it. The good thing is it is curable and not contagious.

Isnt VetRx for there breathing? Also thanks! Did you see the picture? Someone said it could be spreading? What do you think?
Its not that swollen (still a little) and she does not limp, though I would add that.

@Eggcessive
@Wyorp Rock
Can you give me some feedback on what you think about it entering her bloodstream?
@Sylvester017 not saying your wrong just want to know what others think. I need all the prayers I can get and feedback, thanks!

yes, VetRx is used for respiratory, you can also apply it to their comb and wattles - which I've never done - and to their shanks and feet to help with dryness.
I can't speak to the "spreading" question. I would definitely do the epsom salt soak and apply Neosporin to see if that helps.

Yes I have been doing that, okay so how do I apply VetRx? What does her new wound look like? It goes deeper to the bone or surface? If you read my other posts I said she bled a good amount, it was fresh "beautiful" blood. Is that good?

Please take it easy and just follow the suggestions. Don’t jump to conclusions. Most bumblefoot does not require antibiotics, just soaking, and if you can get out any pus it what is needed. After doing a couple of surgeries early on, I only treated bumble foot if there was serious swelling or if the chicken was limping. It is better to try and prevent it by providing smooth roosts (sand them or cover with carpet if needed) and lower roosts. Make sure bedding is thick and remove rocks and other sharp objects that can cause small cuts. That is where bacteria can enter the skin.

Oh, no problem! I have ??? too re: infections. Probably will be a no-brainer solution that we don't know yet but someone who's been thru it should be able to advise.

After our 1st hen had surgery at the vet I vaguely remember him giving us an oral med too but it was 5 yrs ago so don't remember what it was but it probably was an antibiotic for any possible internal infection. With our treatments in later years we never needed surgery or meds other than triple antibiotic ointment cuz there was no pus or redness ~ just flat crusty bumblefoot scabs.

What a learning curve & roller coaster ride this is but I'm w/you on this in prayer.
