Bumblefoot?

Re: antibacterial salve question ~ After our vet did surgery on our first bumblefoot hen he gave us antibacterial ointment to put on the wound & wrap daily. There naturally was blood on his surgical wraps of her feet but it was healing well after that first bandage change & we applied ointment once every day keeping a cottonball over the wound then bandaged the feet. Epsom soak, dry w/paper towel, apply antibacterial ointment w/cottonball (later years we switched to flat round cotton makeup pads), & wrap ~ next day repeat, next day etc. We were so new to bumblefoot & had visions of "losing" her but she healed so well.

I wish I had experience w/pus infected bumblefoot but we never had a case like your hen w/ the white swollen infection so I don't want to mis-advise but it seems logical that an infection not only needs topical treatment but oral antibiotics also for any infection entering the bloodstream? At that point I probably would bite the bullet & pay the vet fee for the proper treatment & prescriptions. Only cuz I wouldnt know what to do at that point.

And yes, it's a shame breeders are formulating hybrid layers or hybrid meat birds w/ shortened lifespans & health problems. Makes me so mad
but I digress  !

Anyway, I just wanted to say prayers 🙏 for you (& your birdies) & bless you for caring & loving on these precious hens 🤗
Okay i know im getting anoying and you have a lot of questions but I dont want her to pass, when you say puss infected does that mean it goes deeper then what we/I saw?

I never had a case w/pus so I have no idea about how internal it goes. I'm going to see if I can find an agricultural poultry site that discusses bumblefoot. I believe ducks get it too.

Oh, no problem! I have ??? too re: infections. Probably will be a no-brainer solution that we don't know yet but someone who's been thru it should be able to advise.

After our 1st hen had surgery at the vet I vaguely remember him giving us an oral med too but it was 5 yrs ago so don't remember what it was but it probably was an antibiotic for any possible internal infection. With our treatments in later years we never needed surgery or meds other than triple antibiotic ointment cuz there was no pus or redness ~ just flat crusty bumblefoot scabs.

What a learning curve & roller coaster ride this is but I'm w/you on this in prayer.
Did it look the same as my hen? Im going to do everything I can but Im only a kid not the boss of the house lol. Meanwhile God is in charge and I have to put him first and trust he has the whole story written out already, just cant stomach loosing her, its hard we all know that. Im someone who wishes I could sleep with my chickens as plush toys lol! I saw a comment to the vet and it said "for the money bad service" so I might have to search more. Im going to do what Eggcessive said and take it easy, im driving myself banana's and thats not going to help, I know it.

It's bumblefoot ~ they can all look different & apparently pus starts at stage 2.5 to 3 which is what your picture looked like but I'm no expert. When you opened the wound did pus or fluid leak out? If so keep draining it and follow the DVM website treatment options.

We've been successful using triple antibiotic ointment from Walmart or Target stores without spending $$$ on more expensive antibiotic brands. And flat round cotton makeup pads dont shred apart like cottonballs do for covering the wound then wrap the makeup pad to the bottom of the foot. I mean we used cottonballs too but later we liked the flatter makeup pads. We trimmed the makeup pads smaller to fit better.

Alright thanks! When we opend there was only blood, no other substances according to my mom. In the pic u see a little white, that is just a little puss, we tried to squeeze but nothing came. Sad. Thanks for the other websites!
