Bumblefoot?

Pics
There are different reasons a chicken can get bumblefoot which is a staph infection.

Rough, splintery and dirty roosts.

Coop floor without or only little bedding, so they can hurt their feet on little stones or other debris when jumping down from the roost.

Nutrient/vitamin deficiencies that can weaken their immune system.

Being overweight.

Genetic predisposition.

Thorny plants.

The above are just a few.

We dont have bedding in our coop. We put mats down but they dont jump down, we mostly help them off.

It's so good to hear you making progress. It's not a quick thing to fix. Time & patience is required. Just remember to make vet appts in advance should future treatments dont make progress. You are an experienced person now & learning as you go to gain confidence.

Bumblefoot takes me a long time to treat cuz we keep our hen in-house & take time treating gently. The last treatment took more than 4 weeks but the hen became very tame & sweet.

We soak her in warm Epsom for 25-30 min, then apply triple antibiotic ointment w/a round makeup pad, then vet wrap, repeat again every day. We keep the hen in-house to keep foot clean. We never have used Prid ~ our case of Bumblefoot never has progressed to the swelling stage cuz we monitor the hens feet to catch early.

We don't force the Bumblefoot sore off but let it come off more naturally either in the wrap or in the Epsom soak. Each day I very gently test how loose the edges of the wound is progressing but never force pulling it off until it is very loose. After the Bumblefoot core comes off we continue using triple antibiotic ointment pad & vetwrap so the wound forms a healing scab in a few days which we also might use the foot soak to heal & loosen scab naturally ~ no pulling.

After the healing scab falls off we still wrap w/ vetwrap no ointment for a day or two just to cushion the new skin. Then the next day let the hen walk around w/no bandage to toughen new skin & to get her normal walk back again. She's an older bird so we're more patient treating her.

I had to laugh at some videos that dunk their chickens in deep buckets to soak their hens. We only use an old shallow 5-qt cook pot w/ about 3-inches of warm Epsom soak for the hen's feet. But then she's accustomed to the treatments and sits herself on the edge of the pot ~ so cute. But I hold the pot just in case she spooks to knock it over. DH sits to my side to hold down her wings but usually only when he puts her into the water does she flap just a little & once she feels the warm water she relaxes. When the soak is done he lifts her out onto paper towels to dry her feet.

Here's the photo I took of DH sitting w/us while the hen is sitting in the foot soak. She's not up to her neck in a bucket either :lau

Thank you! Yes I definitely am getting excperinced with 4 diffrent hens with bumble, today when I soak im going to give her palm a deep maasage lol!

Hi! I just notices my hen was walking a little bit off, so i picked her up and saw little scabs, bumblefoot?? Getting pictures now. What do I have to do?
I read soak 10min in warm water with Epsom salt. I am hopeful it softens a bit so I can pop off the scab. I can't use a scalpel. I have tremors and it wouldn't be safe for either one of us. It's not red or swollen but she seemed a bit off. I picked her up. Gave her a check and bumblefoot on both. She's laying alot and not walking. Not herself. I will continue soaking her feet daily. Until I can remove safely. Would it hurt if I just pulled it off? HELP..
I can clean and debried after scab is gone and treat with antibiotics

Dont rush it.. Something I had to learn the hars way. Soak for 15 mins, massage, apply prid drawing salve, cut a piece of gauze and wrap. Be sure its not tight, if she is wobbling and falling or constantly pecking, there might be something wrong.. See if you can squeeze a finger on the top (theres a artical to how to wrap) once you see that the scab is coming lose, start peeling at it but gently, while also massaging her fut to bring the puss out. When you get the scab off, make sure all the puss is out. Pack with triple antibiotic ointment, add gauz pad and wrap. Good luck!

Thank you so much. The scab is getting lighter in color but still can't remove the scab. I will soak daily. I put VetRx and wrapped today. I checked all my girls today and discovered one more girl with the beginnings of bumble also. She'll get a salt bath tomorrow also. Is it contagious???

Its not contagious amongst birds, but when you do there feet wear gloves, its a staph infection so it can transfer to humans also.

Get prid drawing salve.. It works magic!
