Hello! I noticed very recently one of my chicken's has been getting bumps around her eye and on her comb. Does anyone know what this is? Is it fatal? And what can I do to help her get rid of it? Will it spread to the others? She doesn't seem to be having issues seeing, moving, etc. - she's acting like she was before she got this, but I'm not sure what it is and none of the pictures online or other threads look like this. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone has suggestions on meds I can get to give her, that'd be great!

My 6 hens all have fowl pox right now, and it looks like what is on your hen. We had a real problem with mosquitos this year. I read that fowl pox is not fatal in the dry form, but the wet form could be if not treated properly. All I'm doing right now is giving antibiotic in their drinking water and extra probiotic in their food to try to keep them from getting secondary infections. I'm waiting and watching to see if they start acting really ill. So far, none of them are. It's been almost 2 weeks since I first saw the bumps appear. Even with molting happening also, they seem pretty spry, just understandably grumpy and off-lay.

Conduct an on site search on 'fowl pox'. That may be what you are dealing with.

Thank you very much, will do!

She looks to be suffering from fowl pox which is a virus
Here is some reading on fowl pox ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/avian-pox-how-to-treat-your-chickens-for-avian-pox.47704/

Thank you! :)

What antibiotics and probiotics do you use? And yeah, the mosquitoes are getting bad out here, too - trying to get rid of them any way we can, but it's not working. :barnie

Should I separate the ones affected by it, or will it not do much good since the mosquitoes have it? And what do I do about chicks?? I have almost 2 month old chicks, and about 1 and 1/2 month old ducks that are sort of in the area of my older chickens, so the mosquitoes could definitely get over to them - none of them have any bumps yet.

I'm using Pennchlor 64 powder in their water at a rate of 1 tsp. per gallon. Some people might use more, but I chose not to.

You are not supposed to eat eggs from a hen treated with this medication for 10-14 days after the last dose given. I have been cooking any eggs they lay and feeding them back them.

I use probiotic capsules like what humans take, open 3 and sprinkle it on their food. I feed soaked pellets, so it usually soaks right into it.

IMO it wont do any good to separate them now. My flock just went thru this and some had really bad sores and affects, other birds had minor symptoms. Just keep a close eye and treat birds if they get lethargic or sickly looking.

Alrighty, thank you. I'll look into getting some in case any of mine get sicker. :)

Thank you - will do! What would you recommend treating them with if they need it?
