bumpy Scabs on a few of my hen's neck? *Pictures* *UPDATE* POST *32

I can push the swelling in on her face, its like just water in there, nothing solid. Her nose is not running now, but her right eye is a little watery. Her left eye looks good, and healthy. I did a sniff test around her head, and mouth, and nothing smells sour, or anything. Her eye is not crusty too.

If you have syringes and something like 18g needles around you could always suck the stuff out of there... it's a slow process because the stuff in there tend to be thick but it immediately takes the swelling down (at least temporarily). I do that but usually administer Tylan at the same time.

If you get the Tylan, the injectable works better than the powdered from what I heard (I didn't even know there was a powdered form when I got mine and have no personal experience with it). Don't inject into a meaty area with Tylan, it causes permanent muscle damage. Kuntrygirl might have ideas on where to inject, I always injected right into the sinus but I got yelled at in the peafowl section and was told that it's dangerous.

I really can't say. Either way, there is a bacterial infection going on there. If you are lucky, it's secondary to fowl pox. Contact the ag department and ask about testing, they don't hurt the birds for that. It's a blood test. You might be lucky and find that your state does it free. If you can get it done, that would be great for you to know one way or the other. If it comes back negative, it's a great selling point to be able to say that your birds are mycoplasma free (and I think there are at least three major strains of it).

A vet had come to give our horse some shots last week Wednesday , and while he was here, I thought I would ask him, if he could tell me what is wrong with that hen. He had never done turkeys before, but he said that check her over for me. He took her blood sample, and he had it shipped to Arkansas to be tested for Mycoplasma. All I had to was pay for shipping, I was glad for that. The animal clinic called me this morning, and they told me that the result came back as positive for Mycoplasma.

Its going to be very hard to cull the turkeys that I have care for.

I am wanting to find some hatching eggs to replace what I have lost to Mycoplasma. I know that there are some turkeys that are still laying. Thanks for the help.

I am really sorry... I wish the news was better.

I know that you said that you had to cull a bunch of chickens, do you have any now? If you do, it's important to find what strain of Mtcoplasma you are dealing with. One strain is turkey specific, but I believe the others can be carried by other poultry. You don't want to get more turkeys and have them catch it from other poultry.

Editing to add that if you get eggs or turkeys, try to get them from a source that tests for it.

I still do have some chickens left, hopefully they will be gone this weekend. I have ducks, geese, and peafowl too, and they look fine, so I do not have to cull them. I will call the vet about what strain of Mtcoplasma that the turkeys have. Thanks.

You might want to have your peafowl tested too. They can carry it. Unless they are totally isolated from the turkeys (and you disinfect your foot wear before going in with them), they have the potential to infect new birds coming in. If you don't want the risk of losing them if they test positive, then you might as well keep the turkeys too.

My peas are at my neighbor's across the road, They are almost 2 months old to 4 or 5 months old. I do the peas before doing the turkeys, and change shoes between them.

I called the breeder that I got the turkeys from yesterday, and he didn't answered the phone. But He called me back, and I asked him if he has any turkeys poults for sale. He said yes, and he has more hatching tomorrow!

I asked him if he had any of the turkeys tested for Mycoplasma, he said no.

Is there any way that I can have the poults tested, or they are too young to be tested?
